He will get the same compensation the college athletes get - from whose services the Universities make millions - Lot's of experience and access to prove ones self, but not a lot more.
Not to mention a FREE EDUCATION. At least for the ones truly making the school money. Its called a scholarship, so they are being compensated and compensated very well.
That isnt true that he should get no compensation. I know and have seen of several other "official" college photographers that get compensated for their work. It is still a business and most of the time its done as a job for the college. Just like any other student that works part time for the school doing whatever, secretary, working in a student union shop, or whatever, doing photography for the school is also a job...plain and simple.
You are providing services to the school, if you werent doing it, they would have to hire someone else. I read about one kid doing the same thing you are that was provided scholarship for doing the job, just like an athlete.
You should be talking to them about something like this as its only fair. Dont start your career off on the wrong foot, being someone willing to work for nothing and looking at it as an excuse to build a portfolio. You can do that without being used by the school.
