Just been recommended as college photographer

I'm not 100% sure this is the right forum but just wanted to show off (lol) that I've just been recommended -against no competition lol- to be 'official' photographer for my college next year, for the yearly magazine thing, website, etc... basically i take photos of all the sports, general activities and have the big say in what goes in and doesn't, apparently it's a big deal and it apparently go on my CV as a good thing lol oh well every little helps

Make sure you get some kind of compensation. College or not, they will be using your photos to better their college, that means you deserve some compensation.

nice had thought about that but i suppose i get to miss CCF= Combined Cadet Force. in which you have to either 'play soldiers' (lol) or do something for the community like work in a charity shop or visit an old folks home... so i get SOMETHING out of it i guess, maybe after a couple of weeks i'll try demanding something lol; thanks for the congrats

Yeah right. His compensation will be the same compensation one would get while interning: experience and resume material, not to mention build a portfolio. Not only that, it will probably be fun.

Thats a shame, I spent the last years of school flying planes and shooting every weekend. CCF aint that bad... But congrats on the job

He will get the same compensation the college athletes get - from whose services the Universities make millions - Lot's of experience and access to prove ones self, but not a lot more.

Congrats! It's a lot of fun. Mine stint in University got me a job with one of the top 10 newspapers in the US. Unfortunately I learned quickly that staff photography for papers doesn't pay a whole lot more then you get in college. So I ended up later getting a real job when family came along. But it was a dang lot of fun - enjoy it. Who knows where it will lead. Me, I got to shoot the LA Olympics... a memory worth a ton. Cheers.

Congrats..... I started shooting for my college's newspaper, website, and catalogs this year.

If nothing else, it's nice to get field and floor access to all the sporting events.

Not to mention, using your camera (hopefully with an intimidating lens!) to get into events your not supposed to ...for free . And finally, if you do shoot college sporting events...most likely you'll become buddies with any local pro's that may shoot the same events. They have taught me a ton.

Not to mention a FREE EDUCATION. At least for the ones truly making the school money. Its called a scholarship, so they are being compensated and compensated very well.

That isnt true that he should get no compensation. I know and have seen of several other "official" college photographers that get compensated for their work. It is still a business and most of the time its done as a job for the college. Just like any other student that works part time for the school doing whatever, secretary, working in a student union shop, or whatever, doing photography for the school is also a job...plain and simple.

You are providing services to the school, if you werent doing it, they would have to hire someone else. I read about one kid doing the same thing you are that was provided scholarship for doing the job, just like an athlete.

You should be talking to them about something like this as its only fair. Dont start your career off on the wrong foot, being someone willing to work for nothing and looking at it as an excuse to build a portfolio. You can do that without being used by the school.

My college is about as "air tight" as they come when money is involved... and they still pay students $7 for each photo published via the weekly newspaper or website. And getting a $35 check each week for doing something I would probably be doing anyway is quite convienent.

If you are going to be the only photographer for the college...... you deserve even more....preferably a flat salary (or scholarship as others have mentioned). Good Luck.......
