As the title says I need an L plate for my 1D mark II n. I just bought a markins m10 ballhead and a Really Right Stuff quick release lever clamp to make it downright perfect. The only thing I'm stuck on, is which L-plate I should get for it. I bought the RRS L plate for my 5D because it looks gorgeous and should be perfectly compatible with my RRS clamp but deciding which one for the 1D2n has proved a little harder.

RRS says on their website that some Kirk plates will work with their clamps. The RRS 1D2N L plate (http://reallyrightstuff.com/body_plates/canon/index.html (external link) then click on the 1d2n on the right) apparantly has to be loosened and moved approximately 1 cm in order to fit the shutter release cable in the camera with the L plate mounted and camera attached in portrait mode (vertical orientation). I don't see anything about that on the Kirk L plate page (http://kirkphoto.com/lbracketsc.html (external link))

1) Does anyone know if the Kirk plate can do this without having to shift the plate?

2) Does anyone know if the Kirk plate will even fit in the RRS clamps?

thanks!

1. as you have noted the RRS L plate has an adjustment so you can make the plate flush with the left side of the camera and have the head of the remote stick out a bit. It still works in portrait mode, but with the lever clamp you cannot slide the plate fully across the clamp. it hits the thickest part of curved clamp front. Then you can slide the plate in from the other direction. Or if you move the plate over a bit in the screw slot, the head of the remote does not get in the way at all. The Kirk simply has greater depth, not giving you this option. I use the first arangement.
2. There are a few plates (notably all Arca Swiss) which will not be held tightly by the RRS lever clamp. As for this specific one, I would simply call RRS and ask, they probably know the answer to a common question like that. Obviously this is not a problem with screw tightened clamps from any manufacture.

You didn't ask, but there is one other distinguishing feature, the RRS L plate has indexing marks on both the landscape and portrait sides. This is really useful for shift lens use (making flat stitched panos, shifting the lens one way and the camera the opposite direction) and for pano clamp use (I use the RRS Pano Elements package). Centering the lens on the clamp is critical to precise nodal point rotations. Since I have a much older L plate I actually filed in an indexing mark into my plate.
