Congratulations to all who entered. I would like to point out that 3 photos submitted (again) are too large to be contenders, including one that placed and one honorable mention.

Some great photos this time but why oh why can't people, including judges, not abide by the simple rules?

For example, apart from those with wrong sizes mentioned by O_T and some with no titles, the third place winner had a border around despite the rules saying in caps NO BORDERS. Not knocking the great photo, but still...

If the rules are going to be disregarded then we should scrap them altogether as otherwise it is not fair to those who enter and take the trouble to read and abide by them.

My apologies for not remembering about images should not have borders. As to size limits, I guess I am dumb, but when I looked at image properties they all were under the 800 pixel limit....can somone infom me as to where I find the pictures size, when posted as I look at it, so I don't do this again.

Again, sorry...I tried hard to read the rules and follow them  But I believe the winner did follow all of set rules...so that's the one that matters anyway.

"...no more than 200K in size"

This rule refers to the file size, which can be seen by right clicking on the image (on a PC anyway) and looking at the properties. For example, the third place winner had a file size of 375K.

The file size can easily be controlled from editing software by changing the degree of compression when saving as a JPEG. I believe it is a fair rule since the degree of compression affects the quality, and everyone should start on a level playing field. The other reason for restricting file size is to make it easier for people with slow dial-up connections.

I should add that the subject for this challenge was an inspired choice, most of the entries were superb, regardless of rule infractions, and I'm glad I didn't have the job of picking the best.

Congrats Ash and to all the others. This was my first attempt. Maybe I should have went with this one, but I just couldn't get it focused like I'd like to have:

I'd also like to point out that the winning photograph is only 799 pixels on the longest side.
The rules clearly state that the longest side must be EXACTLY 800 pixels on the longest side.
I'm not taking anything away from any of the entries from aesthetic point of view, but if I can only submit a photograph that is EXACTLY 800 pixels on the longest side, and under 100kb, then everyone else needs to do the same.
By the way, this fourth infraction of the rules was PM'd to me by another contestant that deserves more credit than they received.
I'm hard pressed to accept this challenge as fair, considering 4 of the entries received are ineligible.
Think I'll go buy a G7......they seem to run a pretty good speed challenge over there.

Im sorry everyone! I really am!!!    I don't know how to make it better? :(
I can't start over, it was my fult for not remembering that frames shouldn't be on an image. I eat that one. And I was completely unaware of how to find the size of an image once posted, I'll eat that too!
Shall I not enter again?

Everyone had really great shots, and I'd love to put them all at first place. So I messed up big. I can offer to no longer enter, if that makes everyone happy. I'd rather not participate if I have to be worried about forgetting something, it's not fun any more.
I'm not trying to sound like a "sore loser", I just want to fix my mistake without everyone feeling like I intentionally put someone above someone else. I didn't...I was dumb and failed to remember all the rules, so it's my fult.
So...at this point the best I can do is to offer to no longer participate in the challenge.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm new here as are many people I bet just trying to learn different things. Seems like the photographs should be doing the talking. Yes there are rules etc but this is supposed to be a fun contest for amateurs to learn and post photos that they are proud of.

You've got a great gallery and absolutely amazing photographs so I would welcome any advice and experience you could share.

I think the right photo won regardless of whether it was off by one pixel or not.. and this is an engineer talking who makes a living out of nit picking at every detail. I'd really prefer to keep the whole environment welcoming to everyone so that everyone has an opportunity to learn and share.

My two cents worth.. and now to find something that begins with "U"

My first exposure to these forums was the beginning of a resurrected hobby for me and I liked some of the things I learned in these little contests. I also sensed a non-judgemental attitude on the forums as a whole which is in contrast to some others where what is called "internet bravery" is commonplace in confrontational comments. I guess I was not right.

Think I'll take a break for a while.

Aray - Please don't feel stupid about this. When we began these challenges there were many rule infractions, but over time we became more familiar with the rules. I know I've broken a few and I don't feel too bad about it ;) .

Here is a suggestion, if you notice somebody posted a picture that is not following the rules, PM them a message letting them know what to do (there are many new people that come to this forum). If you feel like this is not your job, or that the judge should do it, ask the judge to PM them. If you feel that this it is ridiculous that you should have to do it at all, then maybe it's time to re-evaluate your motives for participating in this (prize-less) challenge. I agree that rules should be followed, a gentle reminder will suffice when one is violated. Publicly scolding a judge or participant is unfortunate in an on-line community that has always been known for cordialness and support.

When we begin turning people off from these challenges, then the challenge no longer serves its purpose; to encourage creativity, develop technique, and share it with others.

I agree with the "let's keep it fun and informative" comments. How about starting 2007 afresh and starting out with a new set of "rules." Maybe doing away with the "exactly 800" pixel requiremtn and making it "no more than 800." I've made this comment before, but when you go to an art or photo show, the pictures arean't all the same size.

I have learned a lot enetering and viewing these contests and I think there is a great benefit to having as many as enter as possible.

I agree that there needs to be some rules that must be followed. But I think if the posting rules are too strict than the challenges become a "photoshopping" challenge and not a photography one. I agree with Edd about starting 2007 with some modified rules. Maybe we should take the next 2 weeks and modify the rules instead of a challenge.
