I agree with the "let's keep it fun and informative" comments. How about starting 2007 afresh and starting out with a new set of "rules." Maybe doing away with the "exactly 800" pixel requiremtn and making it "no more than 800." I've made this comment before, but when you go to an art or photo show, the pictures arean't all the same size.

I have learned a lot enetering and viewing these contests and I think there is a great benefit to having as many as enter as possible.

Exactly I tried to make it 800 on one side but it ended up 799....WOW one more to 800. Maybe put a between thing like between 700-800 so the pictures don't get too small

When I right click on a photo the pixel size comes up, but the the KB's show up as bytes. So I did a search and found out that 1Kilobyte=1024 bytes. I hope that helps someone else in the future. I too think that the rules should be redone regarding the longest pixel length. To get upset over 1 pixel is going a bit far. This is meant to be fun and a learning experience and lately it hasn't been fun at all.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for offending anyone regarding mentioning rules, or the need for rules to be followed. That truly was not my intention in the least.
I just spent the past hour going through previous challenges, and it seems that rules have been an issue since the very beginning, long before I came here. When I first found the challenges, I read the rules, and have followed them. I figured they were there for a reason, and they meant that anyone who entered was to adhere to them. These challenges provide a valuable learning tool for all of us, and I kind of figured that the rules added to the learning.
I've seen some excellent photos disqualified because of so called rules infractions, and although it was a shame, I fully understood each time, including the one time I judged, and had to disqualify my choice for 1st place.
If we are going to allow rules here, then they must be followed. I have a suggestion. Do away with the rules all together. Plain and simple. Allow each person to add their entry based on what they feel is necessary.
I will never mention rules again, and if I am fortunate to "win" again, I shall not disqualify any photo for breaking said rules.
Again, I apologize for bringing it up in the first place.
I'll participate again, once you all have decided what you want to do. Until then, I'll view the entries, as I did in the beginning.

I don't think anyone is implying we shouldn't have rules, they are just thinking the rules are a bit too strict is all. I too follow the rules when I have entered in the past. We are all adults here and I'm sure we will all find a common ground concerning the contests. Most of us are just voicing are opinions and concerns is all. As some of us Americans like to say, "It's all good!" LOL!!!

I think this is a good idea too, it seems something about the rules has been either hard to remember, or never fully understood till after you post...Murphy's Law I guess:rolleyes:

You all make valid points, rules are just there to make things fair, but we also want the challenge to be fun and for learning.
I am open to whatever is decided; Whether modifying the rules or not.

And again, I am sorry for hurting anyones feelings with this challenge.

O_T, you don't have to apologize at all. Somebody certainly needed to say something as this was not the first challenge on this forum where rules seemed to be routinely ignored.

The rules are no more strict or numerous than on the G-series forum which has been running much longer and with very few problems, so I think it's just a matter of education.

Best wishes to everyone for a rule-free, photogenic Christmas and a New Year free of controversy!

This isn't meant to open a can of worms, but I have a suggestion...or just a thought really.

The rules are fair, however it seems if the judge were better informed things would run smoother. I am just saying that this area seems to have more "newbies" than other sections...both in new to cameras and challenges. Not always, but more often than in other parts of this forum.
So my thought is that when a winner is picked, they are PM'd they won. And reminded of the size rules, and where/how to find a pictures size from their computer. That way whether or not a picture is enterd is the right size, which can happen, the judge who may not be as acquainted with all things technical, can be better prepared for what they "won".

It's just a thought, I know it would have helped me.

No it wasn't you. There has been some problems with the rules in other areas as well.
But we all learn.
Glad you could contribute, and I hope that I get to see more pictures from you. :D

Im sorry everyone! I really am!!!    I don't know how to make it better? :(
I can't start over, it was my fult for not remembering that frames shouldn't be on an image. I eat that one. And I was completely unaware of how to find the size of an image once posted, I'll eat that too!
Shall I not enter again?

Everyone had really great shots, and I'd love to put them all at first place. So I messed up big. I can offer to no longer enter, if that makes everyone happy. I'd rather not participate if I have to be worried about forgetting something, it's not fun any more.
I'm not trying to sound like a "sore loser", I just want to fix my mistake without everyone feeling like I intentionally put someone above someone else. I didn't...I was dumb and failed to remember all the rules, so it's my fult.
So...at this point the best I can do is to offer to no longer participate in the challenge.

as you by have noted, I have withdrawn from entering because of being chastized for not having stated my camera model, although it is mentioned automatically in my signature but the "judge" had their "show signatures" options turned off in their user panel (hardly my fault) and because my photo was 217K...17 K over the "limit" although when resizing my photo, my program indicated it was less than 200K. Whoops, 8 percent over the limit...that is almost as bad as your photo being 799 instead of 800.

this really is laughable for something that is supposed to be fun and educational. It is educational, but not about photography!

A few people seem to be wound pretty tight these days. A mention of abiding by rules is characterized by "being chastised". The skills of these participants exceed my own by a long shot. I don't have nor would I know how to adequately use a real post processing program and I was able to determine how to fit the picture into the parameters that were set for the convenience of all that view this very informative site. I'm sure that people that are that skilled in this art would be able to ensure that they meet the few guidelines set forth with just a few seconds of inconvenience. I hope that no one really discontinues entering these little contests because I find their contributions very educational besides being great viewing. These rules aren't that tough to deal with.

Ok, perhaps I was wond to tight. I just wanted to make up for my mistake, and make everyone happy, it's my nature.
But like others have said, it's hard to tell what a person is like from typed words.
I plan on entering more challenges that come up, should they be a subject I feel I can enter. And now that I am fully informed about how to find a picture's size, I will be ever "vigilant" in sharing that info with new members so we have less repeats of this subject.
