I am boarding a flight tomorrow morning heading for Atlanta and wish to take my camera along as well. I've read around that photographers are allowed one regular carry-on bag and one for personal items (camera & accessories, etc.) but I believe that only applies to professional photographers with ID and all that jazz...which I am not and do not have. I was wondering if anyone ever carried two carry-on bags and did not experience any problems or if anyone has anything relevant to say that relates to this topic, please share :)

Thanks in advance

I fly all the time with my Camera Equipment, never had a problem. I carry a LowPro Dryzone 200 Backpack, plus a small Wheel About Suit Case with person effects, pills, battery chargers, ect. and have never had a problem. I also carry a loptop from time to time, for a total of 3 bags, and have never had a problem to date.

You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport.
Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport.

They don't care if you are a pro. I carry two bags on almost every flight. No problems so far.

Most airlines post dimensions, weight, number of items allowed on their web-sites, I would check with your airlines site and if you are really paranoid print it so you can show it to whoever may question you.

if you read, it says "(1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item"

hence, i always carry 3 carryons if i feel like taking a total of 50lb of stuff on my back...

I used to carry all my gear in my gear bag and found it a pain. Now I just use my 24-105 and put my camera in my carry one and put it under the seat and take the camera out as soon as I get situated and usally keep it on my lap. Dont get alot of keepers, but its fun and it keeps me awake during the flight...

Great question.

I am traveling to Indonesia in Feb and have purchased my carry on bags. I bought a Pelican 1510 roller hard case for protection. (I am spending 12 days on a boat shooting surf.) I also bought the Tamrac 5618.

I wanted the Tamrac 5256 (Cyberpack 6) but was leary that it may be too big.

If anyone knows if the Cyberpack 6 can be carried on in addition to the Pelican 1510, please let me know.

Thanks

One more question...would bringing my tripod with me be a good or bad idea? I plan on taking pictures at night with long exposures and it wouldn't work out too well if I don't have my tripod

you're allowed two unless it is a really small turbo prop, then its one.

I used to carry on my Cyberpack 6 along with another carryon of equipment, but have since stopped and consolidated because I got hassled on EVERY flight for the Cyberpack and had to talk my way onto every flight. It was more trouble than it was worth.

The reason is that they really want ONE carryon bag and ONE "personal" item, which is NOT supposed to be the normal carryon size. Its supposed to be a laptop, a purse, a SMALL camera bag, etc. So I had to always try to convince them that the Cyberpack was my laptop AND a camera bag and usually after 5 minutes or more of "convincing" would get on.

Also, technically the Cyberpack is NOT carryon size. Its too deep. Carryon size is only 9 inches deep and the Cyberpack is deeper than that so it wont fit into one of those bins if they make you try. It will however, fit just fine under a seat or in the overhead of a normal plane. All bets are off when you have use a regional jet or prop plane.

Now I use a Think Tank Airport Addicted backpack or Airport Security roller and their Airport check-in laptop bag. I can fit all essential camera gear in the backpack or roller and they are both carryon sized, and then all my laptop and cords, chargers, etc, in the laptop bag. I dont get hassled any longer except on international flights where they might weigh the bag as they have much lower weight limits for carryon gear and my bag weighs twice the legal limit. I just try to wear it and make it LOOK light and dont usually get asked about weight.

Good Luck.
