It's important to note that what you can take through security and what the airline will let you take on the plane don't necessarily bear any relation to each other. If the airline places a 2-bag limit (or a 1 bag limit) then it doesn't matter what TSA's allowed; you're going to have to check one of the three.

Good info.

I was goingto buy a Airport Security but I really need the waterproof pelican case. I figured that the Tamrac 5618 would fly better b/c is looks like a laptop bag and connect right to the handle of th pelican handle.

im interested in the tripod as well.....I would rather not check the tripod itself ( unless i can get it to fit in my luggage) but is it considered a carry-on? ill be going from NY to las vegas in January

It may be considered as a carry-on, but anything deviating from the conventional risks getting over-ruled at either security or the gate. Better to check it if possible; remove the head, remove the center column if necessary, but get it down to a size to fit in your suitcase.

I had a monopod that wasnt allowed past check in with my carry on lugage, but putting it in the checked luggage was not a problem (I inquired as to why and was told it could be used as a weapon. (They said a golf club would be treated the same way).

I keep thinking about what to take as carry-on if I fly anywhere. Quite honestly though I prefer the idea of going by sea - even though it costs more.

you're allowed two unless it is a really small turbo prop, then its one.

I will warn that there are tighter size restrictions on some small jets as well, though I suspect that a Florida - Atlanta flight will be on a normal-sized jet rather than a small commuter jet.

I've carried a small camera bag with a couple of lenses, along with my laptop briefcase without problems.

I have the Tamrac 5618 rollaboard. It fits my gear perfectly. It fits the airport sizers barely. I haven't flown it yet, but when I do I'll take it almost empty the first time just to be sure. . .

"Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."
Remember these are NOT rules... They are recommendations from the TSA. I have been on commuter flights that you have to check all your bags on the tarmac and pic them up on the tarmac.

I wouldn't personally have a problem with that since you have an pretty good shot at seeing your gear loaded and unloaded. I'd be pretty nervous about leaving my camera gear to the kind ministrations of the baggage handlers, not to mention the high probability the bag would get "lost".

What about wearing the 300f4 or 400 5.6 (in their cases) on your belt? Would that constitute another bag?:)

I got bounced last Sunday night travelling from MEL to SYD. I had a Pro-Trekker with 300/2.8, 400/2.8, both extenders, 24-70/2.8, 16-35/2.8, a lap top PC, camera body and various bits/pieces.

I knew it was way over weight limit but thought size was marginal (got through OK from SYD to MEL earlier).

The Hosty said I had to check it. I said the bag can go but the gear stays with me - no negotiation.

So they checked an empty Lowe Pro back-pack and I carried all those items with me to my seat, placing them in all nooks/crannies etc. What a pointless pain in the A - the back-pack was probably the lightest item I had...

I just came back from vacation and took a Lowepro Dryzone 200 and Tamrac 5552 on each flight. My only complaint was the attention i received from the security. Every bag was opened and inspected. They told me the silica gel was setting off their system BS
