How good is this lense at shooting close range objects. I am planning on taking photos of model trains. This requires a larger focal plane then a standard maccro (I own the 50mm for some detail shots), and I would like some zoom capability to shoot the real thing as well.

This is what I would like to do. The subject is about an inch tall. This image was created using Hellicon software using about 10 shots from a Sony F717. While I don't expect a lense to be able to keep the whole subject in focus, I would like to create these shots with as few source photos as possible.
