Hey everyone! Ny name is Dan and I just bought my first DSLR. After my trusty Sony F717 died, I decided it was time to get some better gear. I decided on the Rebel XTI because of its lense selection, comfy size and its ability to clean the sensor.

I work as a dispatcher for a few local police/fire departments. For fun, I am very active in model trains, and cars. Model trains was the reason why I got into photography in the first place, wanting to share tips and tricks with others.

Right now, I am finding it difficult to get quality photos of my models. I am so used to my old Sony, it is like trying to re-learn everything. I quickly learned that the kit lense was virtually useless with close range shooting and got myself the 50mm Macro. This is great for detail shots, but not that good for model landscape photography.

This is what I would eventually like to get with me Rebel. This was taken with my old Sony. The model is about an inch tall.

I could really use some tips/comments and recomendations on lenses.

wow thats a pretty detailed model!

why isnt the 50mm ideal? is it not wide enough? perhaps something like the sigma 17-70 would be more suitable, it focuses pretty close but has the option to go wide too, and get in your landscape.

Daniel:
Welcome to the forum. Your Rebel should take fantastic photos of your train models. Suggestion: shoot from a tripod and use a small aperture with a slow shutter. You'll get greater depth of field and less of the photo will be blurry. You're moving up to a larger sensor in the Rebel, and that's part of the problem you're having, Im sure.

I'm guessing that's N gauge, right? If so, it's pretty small, and you will have to take pains to get good shots.

Again, welcome to the forum. I'm glad to see a model railroader in our midst.

Tom

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p
