What do ya think?

The first one is my Daughter.

I'm not really using the ideal lens. I used a 28-105 USM with my XT. I had plans to buy a 70-200 f2.8 after Christmas, but I just recieved a lay off from work. I'll be off for a Month, then back to work, so I had to make due with what I have.

iso 800 and shutter speed of 1 /125..

not sure of the lighting.. but maybe try iso 400 and change the shutter speed to say 1/400 .

It may give a freeze action shot removing the blurr of the movement.

Good try thou and sorry to hear about the job.. as soon as you can get that 70 - 200 well worth the money.. :D

I found that below 800 was way too dark. At 1600 iso I could manage 1/400, but I'd get noise . It wasn't so bad on a small pic though. I need some more time to experiment, which my lay off will grant me. I've got a tourney to goto this weekend, I will shoot some more and post some more shots.

Thanks for your comments...

no worries dude.. again i thing the f2.8 on the 70 - 200 will help that.. but i can understand the noise issue. indoors esp a sports centre is hard work.

As you say practise will only help.. Good luck..

definitely ISO1600, and maybe even 3200. You can deal with noise better than motion blur.

My XT taps out at 1600 ISO, I wish I could hit higher. I'm looking into going to a 30D for it's ranges in ISO.

Here's a few more I shot tonight...

Ok this is from a pro shooter I know who does the Habs games up in Montreal.

He helped me out shooting my fiance's womens team.

Stick around 1/500 for speed.

Stay at ISO 800 once you start getting higher your noise issues will start becoming big problems.

If you can try and get more elevated do that. It keeps the focus on who you are shooting more interesting. Plus your camera doesn't get mixed up having to meter and choose between a dark background and white Ice.

Stick around center ice if you can also and stay opposite the benches. You can get some real nice shots of the officials if they have to talk to the coach and also the players talking with the coach after the periods end.

The shots you have here are really nice though.

I have the non IS 70-200 2.8 and it works great. I just made the purchase of getting a 300mm 2.8 myself. Can't wait for the box to arrive!

Cheers,
Ross

Well I'd like to stay at 800 ISO, but using my current lens (28-105mm) I cannot hit lower than f4 in it's zoom range. Once I get back to work after my lay off, I will be saving what I can for a 70-200 f2.8. Hopefully that will get me shooting at 800 ISo in the rinks my daughter plays in. I've been shooting from the players bench and the penalty box. Shooting from the stands will not be possible even with a 70-200. In Canada, all of our rinks have netting around the rinks that goes from the top of the glass to the roof. This was strictly enforced to stop injuries and deaths to people in the stands, by pucks leaving the rink.

Thanks for the tips and your comments.

These are of my Daughter...

snapman -- your shots are good, and I think you're doing all the right stuff with the gear you have and the arena you shoot in. Much better to shoot from the bench or box than thru netting or glass. Your focal length requires you to be close. Also, pro players don't wear cages, and they really play heads-up, so shooting from high can still capture faces. With kids, if you shoot from high, you can't see the players faces. Your daughter looks like a pretty good skater, but she's mostly looking down. Also, pro rinks are better lit than amateur rinks - you and I can't realistically shoot at ISO800.

best wishes, may your new job have a hockey-fan boss who gives you tickets.
