Anyone have input on this???? I had a lady inquire about using one or more of my photos for a book she is writing and wanted to know how much I would charge for that.

I think that falls under commercial licensing, but have NO IDEA what to charge for that! In Smugmug, I can set prices for 1.) Low Res (1 Mpix), 2.) High Res (4 Mpix), 3.) Original.

Thoughts please????????!?!?!?!?

Thanks!

Before you sete prices for this kind of work, you really need to know how many copies of the book are being printed. In the commercial world, pricing for use is completely based on usage volume.

Check out some of the stock websites (not $1 stock or RF stock, but places like Alamy and so forth) and you can see what they'd charge for that kind of use.

For example, Alamy suggests $220 per image for a retail book, inside placement (not a chapter heading page), 1/4 page or less, up to 100,000 distribution, in the US only. Worldwide is $365.

Do you ever sell images other than this one job?

If so, you should invest in Fotoquote. www.fotoquote.com (external link)

Its WELL worth the money and you will start to see how much you are undercharging. The first sale I made using this to price, I made more than the cost of the program back because I had such a low price in my uneducated head.

I use this program for EVERY price I quote. In many instances its high for some of the fields I work in, but it helps to know what the photos are really worth and you can negotiate from there depending on your clients needs.

But you do need to know what kind of book this is, how many are being printed, where your photo will be used in the book and what size.

For instance, FQ for a general hardcover retail book has a low price of 1/4 page and less than 10k copies of $157 and a high price for the cover $2520 for a book up to 500k copies.

Get the program, its invaluable for a pro of any kind. Even if you only sell a couple times a year, it will pay for itself in increased sales dollars.
