i don't know what on earth would make him say that but maybe it has something to to with the 300mm F4 IS that he owns which is having problems.

Wow! I was thinking of getting a 1.4 Extender for my 70-200 f/4. I definitely will now!

i took pictures with the non-IS for more than a year and i recently bought the IS.

if you don't know the difference you are not missing anything and if the IS had never been made i would still be using the non-IS....it is that good of a lens.

Wow this photo just answered my question, Ive been trying to find photos and get info on how the 70-200 L (non IS) does with the 1x4 converter. Ive had this lens for only a few days and I wrapped in it. I purchased it to replace the EF 100-300 usm and I dont think I would go back to that lens now Ive discovered this one. So I am thinking of getting the converter.

If anyone has any photos taken with this lens with the 1x4 converter I would love to see them

hey thanks for this thread - I'm currently in a similar predicament; wondering if I should get the 70-200 f4 or the equally priced 70-300 IS f4/5.6 USM

I'm now reconsidering if I would rather have the IS with the extra 100mm, or the f4 with extenders.

I'm confused. If the non-IS version is that good, why buy the IS version? When do you use IS on this lens?

Same here. Other than build quality, which do you guys think is the better of the two?

IS works whenever the lens is not on a tripod (unless the tripod is moving). it doesn't take much movement to turn a great picture into a good picture or a good picture into junk.

also, the F4 IS can boldly go where the non-IS can only go with a tripod, and this opens up a whole new world of photography.

think of the 4-stop IS as a built in tripod. here was one of the first test shots i took when i brought the IS lens home, and i have taken much better since.

Ive never had and IS lens and only use a tripod for night shots so for me it is not an issue. I handhold everthing and have never had a problem.

these two , although not with this lens are handheld in lowish light, can be done if you are steady
