Ok here is the new one I here At the local compusa. A lady asked what kind of card to use with the cameras she was looking at. Sales man goes though all the different kinds. THen he said well most pros used the CF cards but they are going to be obsolete soon. The only reason the pros still use them is just because they have alot of them. The real question here from me is is there somthing newer coming out did I missomthing? I personally thing the guy was just talking out his ass. Then again I've been wrong before.

Everything becomes obsolete eventually. In my memory only SM became competely obsolete in the last couple of years. There is a new kind of memory that's just been developed but it'll take years before it hits the market.

What the salesman was trying to do was to sell something she had in teh shop. Generally something less than what you actually need so that you will then want to return it and pay for an upgrade. Yes. She was talking from whence the sun fails to shine.

The move is toward SD cards - they are smaller, and they are faster than CF cards.

In five years or so CF cards will be a fond memory (no pun intended).

Have Fun,

I hope they dont go that small. I have a hell of a time with any thing smaller than the CF card. I even heard on the raido this weekend from one of those AM shows about computer stuff that she would not suggest using anthing other than a CF. Mainly She said because of the size easier to handle and more durable.

eventually, probably they will be gone. But for now, they are the industry standard. SD is trying to come in, but really only has teh consumer market, as the higher capacity cards are very iffy and incompatable among devices and readers etc

I agree about the size, but all of those pins on a CF card can be a problem, and the card slot issues with CFI & CFII size cards make them problematic.

Look at all of the new P&S cameras - they are pretty much there. Ni*on is in transition in their DSLRs, too - it won't be long for Canon.

The Pro cameras still use CF. The amateur cameras use SD. Personally I would rather have a new standard - with a new card design rather than HDSD. I feel SDHC is supported by so few devices that it's not worth using. For example, my PDA uses SD but I don't know whether it takes just SD or SDHC as well. The same goes for my laptop as that has a built-in media reader (everything except CF). I know it takes SD but HDSD I'm not so sure about. Pretty much the same for my multimedia reader and the SD reader on my other computer.

I feel that perhaps the headlong dive for an out-dated format is a big mistake by all the main manufacturers. CF is a clear winner because of its larger form factor. I'd hate to have to hunt for an SD card in the dark.

Have Fun,

sd faster? since when? sd cards now come around 20mb/s max, cf cards can go 40mb/s... you forgot that size is also important. other than sd-hc cards (not compatible with a vast majority of cameras over a year old) which are less than 10mb/s speed, no sd card is over 2gb in size (now with sd-hc, they may be able to reach memorystick duo's 32gb density sometime in the near future). cf cards will hold their nitch for high performance applications (1d series, as well as 30d+ line) until something replaces both cf and sd (probably a phase type memory, those have the promise of being both fast and very dense)

My research is not exhaustive, but my EOS 1D MKII N has two slots - one CF and one SD. I think it would qualify as a pro camera, and although it does have a CF slot, it certainly does use SD, so your statement is questionable. . .

In the speed race, SD wins. According to Rob Galbraith's performance database, a Sandisk Ultra II SD card is faster than a Sandisk Extreme IV CF card (in an EOS 1D MKII N). You can look it up:

http://www.robgalbraith.com …ti_page.asp?cid=6007-8200 (external link)

The Extreme III SD card is even faster, and Sandisk hasn't even introduced an Extreme IV SD card. ;)

Speed ratings in an uncontrolled environment are meaningless - what matters to me is the speed rating writing from my camera to the card.

And the size issue may be a personal preference. At this point in time, 2GB is plenty big enough for me - if I need more space I'll carry another card and/or a PSD. By the time SDHC is needed for the majority of users, the issues will be ironed out, just like they were with CF a couple years ago.

i do hope they get ironed out because sd cards are so much easier to carry around, and often they are cheaper too... i'm still holding out for phase memory though... ram speed, flash capacity and price

and if you look at the actual tests, cf vs sd has nothing to do with it in reality, the camera has simply reached it's physical limit on the speed of transfer. in a next gen pro body, i would hope they boost the write speeds to 30mb/s theoretical instead of the 10mb/s they have right now...

Have Fun,

Your 1D uses CF. When was the last time you tried to use SD in it? The Fuji S5 Pro uses CF and XD.

Personally I'd avoid XD as it tends to lose data.

Actually the 1 series cameras do have two slots. Here is an excerpt from Canon's (external link) site:

DCF 2.0 (Exif 2.21): JPEG, RAW and RAW+JPEG simultaneous recording provided Backup image recording enabled (Same image recordable on CF card and SD memory card)

My EOS 1D MKII N does use Compact FLash - but I have yet to record my first image from it on a CF card. So far, all the images I have taken with it have been on SD cards, which fit right into the second slot in the camera.
