Another hood shot

so how are you doing these. closed hood shot. and an open hood shot, with photshop layers.

then you would cut out just the motor...but why is there a clear circle in the middle. im new to this whole photography/photoshop stuff

It looks like you were a bit to aggresive with your 'erasing' maybe....caused some definate hard half-circles.

And yes this can me accomplished with the two shots (hood open, and one closed) a tripod is what you really need, and then photoshop layers.

Take two shots with camera on tripod. Hood open, then hood closed. Then you layer one shot on top of the other, then using the eraser tool, set about 20% opacity, you slowly start erasing. This was my first attempt, so you can see the circles where I got heavy. The rain drops do make this more dimensional. Real easy to do, just takes practice.

I agree, they are a very nice detail and work well on the left particularly. The reflection of the lamp standard is a bit of a shame, but other wise I like it.

I like your style and creativity. Keep them coming. Your giving me a lot of ideas.

Another way you could do this is to use the lasso tool with a 2-5 pixel feather. Lasso the area you want to erase and then use a pen size slightly larger than the area. Set your density like you did and a single stroke does it for each pass. It helps in avoiding the circles and the feather gives you the nice edging.

You could also use a layer mask and use the paint bucket in lieu of the eraser tool.
