Is the XTi worth $200 more than an XT?

i would go with the 350d, body only and use the change to get a better lens, perhaps a sigma 17-70.

Exactly! Forego the kit, get an XT body, and use the extra money to get a better lens. You won't be sorry.

Focus issues are NOT a major problem with the XT. Mine never gives me trouble. The only time the two extra focus points will make a difference is when you're in servo mode, shooting small moving targets. Otherwise, the XT performs very well in focusing.

Just my .02.

XT and XTi wont be too different, get good glass dont buy the kit lens. 8mpix is actually far more than you will ever need.

The focusing is better but not worth the extra 175, if that was so get a 2nd hand 20D much better than the XTi. I just think the xti is such a gimic its too simialr to the XT and the things i really didnt like about the XT are build and viewfinder.

Use the single focusing centre spot for the xt and buy a standard fast prime 28,35 (50 is too long) and save for an ultrawide 10-20mm. or as someone says the 17-70 sigma is a good all i one lens

Def dont buy the kit lens its rubbish.

I disagree that the kit lens is rubbish. I think for the price when you are buying it as a kit, the kit lens is actually a really good deal. I've had many really nice shots with the kit lens and it still serves a purpose for me (the purpose being that I don't have 18-23mm covered in my range). Typically for me, when I need wide, I don't need fast so the kit lens still comes in handy and it's really not that bad of a lens.

That being said, you can often pick one up very cheap on e-bay from people who have upgraded if you are interested in it. And yes, in comparison I would have bought the Sigma 17-70 over the kit lens, but it wasn't available when I bought my XT. The things I don't like about the 17-70 are:
1. Variable min aperture over the range of 17-70.
2. "Digital" only - made for a crop body (won't work properly on my Elan II film body)
3. Consumer level construction.

I picked up the Sigma 24-70 EX and it's been my pride and joy. Now I'm saving for some good fixed focal lenses.

I do agree with Ray_lam5 on pretty much everything else though - a used 20D over an XTi and a fast prime go a long way. Canon has a 35mm f2 for under $250. But if you can afford it, the Sigma 30mm f1.4 gets rave reviews (and yes it's digital only before somebody else points that out).

the only thing that the XTi has over the XT that is important to me is the 2.5" larger LCD screen. Despite that, I feel that lacking the classic monochrome LCD will just sap more power off the XTi.
Also isn't the XTi underexposes and in terms of overall IQ, the XT is better?

XTi has the high performance cross point for center focus - XT does not. I get far more keepers under challenging conditions with the 20D than I did with the XT.

Well, I am still on the fence. One minute XTi, the next XT. A friend of mine has the XT and he gets really nice shots with the kit lens. Another friend has the 30D and and a canon 17-85 lens with IS. The friend with the XT is a much better photograher and his photos come out much better, since the other guy only uses auto mode, but wanted a better camera.

I like the display on the XTi better, I don't care about more MP at this point and I am not sure I would know the difference with the upgraded AF.

I am a very fast learner and may outgrow the XT or XTi very quickly, but then again who knows. With either choice, I cannot se myself spending big $$$$ on lenses until I master the kit lens. Most of my shots will be of family and my other hobby, cars.

I can get an XTi with kit for 765$ but not sure what color(I prefer black) and if that includes shipping?

Anyway, The display is the big selling point for me, but for $175 I am not sure it is worth it.

I am not sure about a second hand 20D, seem like it could be hit or miss.

Steve

I can put this fear to rest. You may or may not outgrow the XT or XTi, but no quicker than the 20 or 30. Feature wise they are all almost identical and what you can do i one, you can do in the other. The difference between 8 m-pix and 10 m-pix as you say is minimal as is the defference between 3 or 5 fps. It really comes down to cost.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Cameta is a good seller, and if the price stays around that mark, it's an excellent deal IMO.

Don't worry about the smaller display of the XT. Both screen are too small to view your images accurately anyways.
