I had an idea for this, but im wondering what you guys thought, and if any of you do this. it seems like a good idea for indoor portraits, with the on camera flash providing the bounce, and the bracket flash providing the fill.

Very nice sample shots. But bracket benefits the most when camera in portrait position, my eyes are all crossed up in thinking how to position the flashes in that mode :)

Would you be able to use that setup outdoors because of the slave flash position? I would be stuck with two flashes and bracket soon, until I figure which wireless setup to get to use both flashes off camera. Your idea is interesting for certain situations and if you don't mind, i will use it sometimes :p .

still thinking...

Looks like a great idea. It would be interesting to try different wirelesss ratios with it. Thanks. I'll try it.

couldnt i just rotate the bracket flash head towards the ceiling, and aim the main at them, and reverse the ratios?

Consider this...the bounce off the ceiling provides a very large diffuse light...GOOD FILL! the light from the bracket flash provides good specular direct light...GOOD HIGHTLIGHT!

As point out, that configuration works only with the camera in portrait orientation. You would need to use a camera-rotator bracket in order to keep the specular flash to the side of the camera even when the camera is in portrait oritentation.

I haven't tried this using my Custom Bracket yet, but I have put a grip flash on my 30D, plugged in the pc sync while using a 550EX on the hotshoe.

For me it worked great. Shadows are definitely minimized.

Next step is to try it with a better bounce card style flash diffuser on the 550EX. After that I'll pick up the part I need from custom brackets to mount the grip flash on the bracket while the 550EX is mounted above the camera body and see if I get any benefit in portrait orientation.

The nicest part for me is the custom bracket that I have will mount on my tripod with a custom bracket quick disconnect.
