I have heard that the viewfinders of the crop (1.6x) cameras (30D, 400D etc.) with built in flashes are smaller to accomodate the flash mechanism?
Any truth to this?
I'd give up the built in flash in a second for a larger viewfinder.

Worry, for Hasselblad feels a popup is useful enough to include one:

I wouldn't mind if my 5D had a popup flash, they can be damn handy at times.

I think this has more to do with the crop factor than the popup flash. As far as I can tell the viewfinder in my 5D which has no popup flash is no larger than the one in my Elan 7e full frame film camera which has a flash.

bad idea, it'll get you an error message on your camera and then you have to power down and restart...

Mine's taped, I've never had a problem with it error messaging. I taped it not so much down as a I taped the big gaps around the top where water can come in straight into a bunch of electronics. I know that the other buttons etc aren't weather sealed, but they're a much smaller target.

And yeah, I'd most certainly have gone for a 20D with out the popup flash if they offered it. Before I owned a hotshoe flash I just didn't use the flash and used my 50/1.8 in the dark.
