I'm a total N00b when it comes to using a DSLR, i just got my 30D, though i do know how to do the manual settings and all that stuff, and right now, i'm just senior in high school w/ a pro camera. Anyway, my friend asked me if i could shoot a friend of his, this friend is a "rapper" and he wants someone to take some shots of him, so i was reccommended since i am the head photographer for our newspaper. He said he would be able to pay $200 for the job. I asked him questions like, location, prints size, things like that. That do you guys think, any suggestions?

Matt-

I think the best preparation is to gather a variety of sample pictures of other established rappers from websites such as rolling stone, vibe, the source, etc and review them with the client before the shoot. It will help you discuss the attitude, location, style, clothing, and composition of the shoot in detail. If you do not have access to studio lighting, it would be a very good idea to get an Off Shoe Flash Cord or ST2E flash trigger so you can use your flash off the camera. I would deliver the pictures on CD at 8 by 12, 4 by 6, and web sizes and let him make the prints. $200 is a fair fee for this project.

have fun-
Scott

Top five things I would consider:

1) What is the end product (i.e. deliver photos electronically, portfolio of photos, relinquishment of rights to photos)? This will determine what that $200 really represents and are you underselling yourself.
2) Do you have the equipment for the job after understanding lighting, location, access to the subject, etc...?
3) Is this a one time deal? Your attitude (and it appears to be good) will determine this more than anything. I woudn't get too picky over little things.
4) Do you know the types of shots they want? I agree with getting familiar with others in his profession and their types of shots.
5) Take as many shots as you can. When in doubt, take the shot and get as many angles as humanly possible. Bring a ladder, a stool, kneepads, etc.... You will catch some great angles. Get action, get stills, etc....

One last thing, get his expressions. These rappers have a knack for all kinds of expressions when they are doing their thing and without the emotion, it they won't be impressed.
