A series of 1/50th pan shots from a 3 hour Cross Country race my brother organised.

Pans turn out much nicer when the vehicle is only moving in 1 dimension.
Add some suspension movement in there and things start getting awkward.
But overall I'm happy with how things turned out.

C&C welcome.

Thanks :D

It just takes practice.
When you've been doing low-speed MX pans as long as I have (1), it becomes instinctive and natural and you expect every one to be a keeper (2).

(1) I took my first last week :D
(2) Well 1 in 10 or 20.

8+4 are best in that order. other ones seem a bit too blurry, but at 1/50th they are still 100x better than anything i could hope for

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

#8 is my brothers girlfriend so I had to get a good one there or I'd be in trouble.

They've all got a bit (usually central) that is sharp(ish).

I think I'll try 1/100th next time and see how much is sharp then :D

You're panning well! I think #1 is nice, #8 is better, and #4 is the pick - it has a sense of story. You have the same problem as with mountain bikers - the head is down, giving bad shadow. At the World Champ Mountainbiking in Rotorua, photogs were using wireless control to a 580EX on the ground, set a stop down. It gave the pix a big lift. I shot from ground level with on-camera 550EX. and that worked. But I was always concerned about losing my face to a stray wheel. I quess that a grand-level flash would be at high risk in the MX nvironment.

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

Excellent Panos. 1/50 th is very slow! I normally don't go below 1/60th. It can be frustrating getting a good shot. I need more practice. Maybe with skiing in a couple of weeks.

Nah, I don't like using a flash

You don't need flashes to bring out the detail at MB races :D

That is the detail we want for sure :P
Great pics! 1/50 sec pans aren't too hard to get one, but you had many hits which I wouldn't be able to pull off :P
Yay for shutter burst! :P

I got about a 66% success ratio with the slow pans.

I don't use burst mode at all.

Unless...
The only times I've used it are at a MX for a crash and karting for a crash.

If you really need it then a 9 frame burst isn't really enough especially when it takes sooooo long to clear the buffer.

My thinking on burst mode is using it to capture a sequence of events is cool.

If I had a faster camera then I might use it more.

Tough at that speed.....I bit blurry for my taste. I've found between 100th - 200th is perfect for MX. I think 4,6, & 7 are the best of the group.

Normally I'd be shooting at 1/320th and around 1/200th for pans.
These were for fun :D

it's always fun to try different things, and for 1/50th, these are great! i've tried many different speeds, and like you said, with moto, there's too much movement in every direction besides horizontal to make anything below 100 or 80 very feasible.
