Hey folks,
I just bought a XTI. I have been playing with it for a few days now. I have taken some really good photos but I am struggling with a few things.
1) Noise. Is anybody else having a problem with noise? I took what I thought was going to be really good photo this am. Ran home and downloaded it. I was very disappointed when I looked at it. Even at ISO 400 it seems to be very noisy. The reason I did not post picture has to do with my second problem I have not figured out yet.
2) I have been shooting in RAW and Large fine modes. But I have not yet figured out yet how to resize them. I know this sounds silly but I can not find it in the software that came with camera. Or does that software just not do that? I downloaded a jpeg compressor (Jpeg imager 2.3). Seems to do ok but I am still having issues trying to resize for emails or post on web. Do I need to just buy photoshop? I was trying to wait a bit before I came off the hip with more money such as that.

Would someone be willing for me to email them the photograph to resize and post for for help on the noise issue?

Thanks in advance!
Matt

I think the RAW and JPEG file sized are under the menu section of the camera.
If you underexpose and you try to compensate in processing (CS2 does it by default) you will get noise. Well exposed shots at ISO 400 should be pretty noiseless.

OK But my pics this am came out with visible noise(looks to me anyway) completly unprocessed. I beleive they were underexposed but not to the point I fell like they should look like they do. Steve is going to upload for me . And then maybe you will get an idea on where to steer me. The resizing issue I was talking about after shooting them can I resize them with the software that came with camera. Thanks Tee

Microsoft.com has a tool called "Image Resizer." It lets you resize any photo with a right-click of the mouse. You can also do it in your photo editing software.

The download link to the Image Resizer is here:

I'm not sure what is causing the noise problem. I have not had problems, even at 1600 ISO.

Thanks guys. After looking at it it may be more underexposed than I was originaly thinking.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that picture...It's hard to tell how noisy it is with an image that's been resized so small.

The Canon Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera will convert and resize the images. Here's how:

-Open the folder containing your raw images
-select the image you want to convert
-from the File menu, select "Convert and Save"
-Choose jpg as your format
-click the box that says "Resize images"
-Enter the size that you want (easiest to check the box that constrains proportions and enter only one dimension)
-hit Save

done-zo
