For all the photography I've done lately, I have yet to do an engagement shoot. This couple are actually good friends of mine, so I'm not too concerned, but does anybody have any tips on doing engagement shots, especially getting them to relax in front of the camera? They're ordinarily both really fun, energetic people, but are convinced they're both terribly unphotogenic... I disagree.

For the moment, I think my best bet is quantity, so that at least by the end of the shoot they'll both be used to the camera.

Check out Jessica Strickland's Blog and website. I thik she's the best engagement shooter right now. I wouldn't try and pull off her style, but more look at the posing, interaction and placement into the enviornment

Yervant brings the couple to a sidewalk café (if it's warm and nice outside) or asks permission from the owner to go inside to take shots. The couple has a drink to loosen them up. He shoots a lot in public - fashion style - which creates some kind of buzz and excitement.

I think the key thing is to make it seem less like a photo shoot for them. Keep it casual, and engage in conversation so that they'll be comfortable. You know them personally so you're already at an advantage there. Also, I find the worse thing you could do is tell them to smile. It almost always results in that posed looking artificial cheese grin that never looks all that happy. It's better to get them laughing or smiling because they are genuinely amused. Try telling some jokes or share a funny story.

Good luck with your shoot. :)

I am in LOVE with her processing technique. Absolutely GORGEOUS color. I'd love to know more about her workflow.

She takes great photos. I'd guess the images are taken with a polarizer, the saturation and contrast increased, and a vignette applied. If anyone asks her how she gets the colors and effects post here so we all know! :) You'd be suprised how many photographers will share, even if not the whole thing then a little at least. Don't all email her ;)

Jessica Strickland - From another forum:

Hey Guys! Wow...I'm soo flattered!

So, I was informed of this post and thought I might just add my two cents!

I think it is KEY to understand that the look is achieved through many different avenues, not just an action, a camera, a lens, etc! Alot of people have asked me to sell the actions, but the actions will do no good and will be negatively recieved because they won't achieve the same look, if not applied to an already GREAT image that is very well exposed.

I start by shooting on the 5D and as WIDE open as humanly possible at allllll times with only Canon L lenses. (I personally shoot at 1.6/1.8 for everything except groups) Then, I am always always in search of perfect lighting...ideally open shade for close ups and bright sun/blue sky for wide angles). Then, I work to achieve perfect exposures....because, as mentioned, without a really well exposed image....you have nothing! I do shoot RAW and use ACR to do my initial adjustments and conversion to jpeg. Then, I do run a basic action that includes a slight bump of curves, in a very subtle S formation....then a slight bump of saturation, and a slight bump of sharpness. That's reallly it. Every now and then....If I want a more intense look, I will run Kevin's xpro action, but I adjust it like crazy...I pull down the opacity on the different layers and a few other things.

As far as the actions go...I actually am not planning on selling them anytime in the immeadiate future! The honest truth is that Gary said that without me having a clue about it....and then I was informed that I was selling actions and I was quite surprised! I'm not against it.....although, I'm in the midst of a 42 wedding run....so that consumes 100% of my time right now! So. maybe when things calm down and I'm not 2 months behind I will consider it and invest time in making it happen! I really appreciate that anyone even cares to have my actions...so thank you for that!! Stay tuned to my blog over the winter....I'll announce any info on there!

there ya go,

I always start the couple of with something easy and simple. A walk holding hands away and back to you. It's hard to be romantic right away even when you're good friends behind the camera. Slowly, they'll start to warm up..get a little more comfortable being in public, in front of a camera, pda.
