After reading several books, lurking/contributing around here for some time, and playing around with my 400D for the few days that I've had it, I made a few mistakes taking photos at my sons childcare centres Christmas party this afternoon.

Hopefully other newbies like myself can learn from my mistakes!

1) I committed one of the cardinal sins of photography, and failed to make sure that the battery was charged and/or I had a spare with me. I only got about 5 minutes of shooting before the battery ran out.

2) In my rush to take the below shot (not a 100% crop, so it might not be so clear here), I didn't take the time to make sure that my focus was right. The focus here is on the front of his elf hat, leaving his eyes blurry.

3) I didn't think (until later) to use the pop-up flash as fill to prevent or reduce the shadow over the top part of his face.

I did still manage to get some good shots though, before the battery died.

I guess the best way to learn is to get out there and make mistakes! I'll certainly remember these lessons for next time...

That's how we learn my friend, when i learned about selecting my focus point I never repeated that mistake.

You won't forget next time:) Good on ya for sharing the other side of photography.

One of the good bits about digital is that we can make these mistakes and we don't actually necessarily cost ourselves money... just the missed shot opportunities :)

Get some Sterlingtek batteries - have a few of those lying around and you should never be short of battery life again :)

We all live and learn, every day...

Some things to learn from this ...

... get a replacement battery and have it with you
... how to work with levels/curves in PS in order to bring out the shadow details

Best regards,
Andy

some cameras, some lenses,
and still a lot of things to learn...
(so post processing examples on my images are welcome :D)
