“ORTHOGRAPHY, n. The science of spelling by the eye instead of the ear. Advocated with more heat than light by the outmates of every asylum for the insane. They have had to concede a few things since the time of Chaucer, but are none the less hot in defence of those to be conceded hereafter." - A.B.

I think he meant me, as an outmate.

Well spoken A.B., whoever you might be.
I think the Anglois orthography unphonetic ways have created a surfeit of expressive devices at the expense of much gibberish and ambiguity.

I probably have a high school level vocabulary. Unfortunately, it is largely phonetic. In truth, I'm not a very good speller, and I frequently enlist Bill Gates' assistance, especially on longer posts, and when I'm not in a hurry.

Although I do frequently make spelling errors, most of my errors are typing, which is getting worse as I age.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I was wondering what a "hood ornament" was, until I saw a picture.

Ironically enough, of a Jaguar...!

Some folks take "proper" spelling to signify a certain (elevated) level of breeding, education and intellect.
I have a clear-cut weakness related to the latter.;)
My spelling is hardly better than Condyk's. Granted, I think I CAN spell better than CDS, but then again, who does not ? All of which also makes my breeding as well as education highly suspect.;)

Sheesh, we have gone from spelling to breeding in less than 30 posts. You guys certainly bring new meaning to the term "quickie".

Now, now.... the Victorian English anachrones have started slinging their habitual mudballs.

Unfortunately, it is largely phonetic.

Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds? :p

One of my least favorites.... prolly or probly.

I think we have to make exceptions for our Amerikan friends - After all they stole out language and tried to change it slightly, with a few missing letters here and there, so we would not notice :-)

It's the spelling of 'Lens' (with the extra 'e' on the end) that irritates me though :evil:

I've never had a problem with spelling The like Teh. But I see a lot of people who do.

The one I always misspell is Untill. For some reason that extra L always seems to get in there.

*EDIT* Must be L fever.
