Say you want to do the photography for the guides you make :p

I've already said I'll write a few guides & shoot pics if they send me to fun places! No luck so far. :( Even our Sales Director says he wish I could travel & take the shots. He is a fan of my work. :D

Ohh this time of the year. Nothing has been scheduled yet but I expect our reviews to be done soon too. But one day notice is not a lot. In my previous job we used a special review form which was used as a guideline on what to talk about. And the review was on both the employee and the employer. Last year my in new job we also used a form like that.

Some of the things covered in the reviews I have been through are:

- followup on last years goal (obviously not possible on the first review)
- evaluation of personal capacities such as workquality, initiative, communicationskills, overview, flexibilities, commitment, efficiency and a whole lot other things.

How would I best give samples of having all those skills?

- evaluation of technical skills

What does this include?

- setting new goals
- plan for achieving the goals
- conclusion

Oh, and how would you guys see this as argument "You have saved X amount of money by hiring me to do the previous publishing company's work. I know the company has it tight with money, but to earn money a company also has to invest - and investing in your staff is one of the best investments a company can make."

Hm, would I then get my butt kicked if (when hearing they can't afford a raise) I reply:
"The company obviously do believe in investing money in staff as you have hired 3 new ppl within the past 4.5 months, as well as one new yesterday. You also have agreed to let us take in part-time help/temporary help & are willing to pay the owner's daughter to do extra work, which I assume is same rate as the other helpers...
This obviously shows the company is committed to further financial investments in personnell, which should mean there is money to be invested in me & my committment to the company".

Samples of skills: Look at the projects you have completed and see if there are some that required something special like long working days or meeting a strict deadline and highlight that.

Technical skills: that is individual and depends what you do and what skills are relevant to your job. Things like language is probably pretty important in your job, and proofing, layout etc.

What a bunch of liberals and amateur occupational psychologists !
Klara, if he starts hedging about the raise, you turn the table on him and tell him what you think about his job performance !

Petkal,
I think he's doing a lot better than our previous boss!!

Besides, he's hotter looking, actually listens, doesn't insult his staff, does his own work & doesn't pile it on others & he's renting me his flat. ;)

Aaahhh, I see....that sounds like you simply can not lose.
I tell ya what....forget about any technical work.... here is a major strategy revision: just bat your eyelashes, pout your lips, sit tight and look pretty. Yup, that will do it.;)

I wish, but he still have to get the owner's consent for giving me a raise as the owner is putting his own money into the company. And owner is a bit too economical.

Claire...haven't you ever heard of bosses seeing what their employees write about them on the web?

It looks like you're mostly getting good advice though. Good luck!

I've been thinking, what other things can I ask for apart from a raise?

When the company I was working for was in a tough financial situation, I told my manager that I understood that a raise was probably not possible at the current time, but that I would be happy to accept an additional week of vacation in lieu of a raise. I told him that one week of vacation time was equal to approximately a 2% pay raise (1 week/53 weeks in the year). I didn't really expect him to agree, but he did!

Ok, so that's our little Pal Nouna unemployed this weekend

First you need to know if your role has developed beyond your original job description, whether you are doing a different level of work than originally, or whether you have added significant value beyond what you should do day to day and will continue to do so. Otherwise, if there is no good business case for your argument then I would just say you accepted the contract originally so that's that! Is your role comparable to similar roles in other companies? If so, then check salaries they offer.

I want my people to be open, honest, committed, positive and self critical and with ability to come up with solutions to challenges and not just moan. This is your chance to show all the right qualities. Know your case for a rise. If you don't then you won't get one. If you do then you still may not get one. In the latter case you either lump it or leave for something else.

best advice you will get on this subject. yearly reviews are tricky but they are important. the major thing is to see how you developed in your role and not just use it as a "crying session". another important thing is to state what you did well but also don't act like you are perfect. i had an employee who pretty much put all 5's in his self assessment which to me was a big no-no because it means that the person thinks he has nothing to learn. i also had a guy that put all 3's and he got the raise because he was really good at what he did but he also knew that there is always room for improvment.

Becca, I've thought about that as well. That's what the bosses have, an extra week.
