I kayak and camp as often as possible and would love to take my 20D with me. Up until this point I've always taken my little, spare camera for fear of sand, water, dirt or bears messing up my expensive 20D. Can anyone offer me any advice on keeping it safe and working while kayaking out to island campsites and hiking in the backcountry?

I'd invest in an airtight waterproof case, like This one by Pelican (external link)

Of course, don't try use your camera while shooting rapids. It's not water resistant.

If all you're looking to do is keep your camera contained while you kayak out across a lake or something "light" in activity like that where it will be exposed to very little water .... you can put the body and lenses in large ZipLock bags (I would personally double them up) or you can get a water resistant camera bag and that should take care of most of the problem.

Keep in mind that neither of these methods will protect your camera from being submersed in water ... just from being splashed with some.

Carry a can of compressed air with you. And use it on all EXTERIOR plastic/metal surfaces only. For the Viewfinder, lens, sensor/mirror etc carry a Giotto type blower. Before you dismount any lens make sure you blow around the point of attachment and inside of the lens caps/covers that will be put on it for storage.

Now I usually do this when I come back to my motel room after spending the day in the field, I dont know if this would work inside a tent or around island campsites.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

All great advice! Thanks! Has anyone used one from a small boat like a canoe or kayak? I just know I always get wet when paddling from mist and spray and whatnot. I'd hate to miss a great shot out on the water but at the same time would hate even more to break my camera by some water that splashes up the side of my boat.
