Alot of threads lately about the need for flash in poorly light indoor gyms for basketball. Now, understand these are not GREAT shots, but what an average AMATURE can do with the right lens and some practice...

Not bad for an average lens and even less average shooter dad...

Super D, I claim Bull Puckey. You're a MUCH better than average shooter!

Great work BTW! What setup did you use??

Thaks guys, that means alot coming from the likes of you guys!

My set up on my XT is...NO FLASH
1)Av
2)85m 1.8
3)set to f1.8-f2.2 depending on light ( I want at LEAST 1/500 and 1/1000 preferably...
4)shoot ALOT, first quarter under the basket of one team 2nd quarter of defense on same team then the 2nd half do the other team.
5)I keep one charger in the wall and at half I switch out one of my batteries in my grip. If I am shooting a tournament I can shoot non stop that way without worrying about batteries...

Now if someone can tell me how to NOT forget the charger in the wall like I have done EVERY time so far please let me know...

Why is your camera eating batteries like that? I can shoot several games on one charge. I do use two cameras but I still don't charge the batteries that often.

servo+ 2k shots=3 battery charges, maybe more depending on servo use, so it makes a bit of sense. now if a 70-200 was used, you would surely need more than that...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Wow, that XT sure likes to eat the batteries eh! ;)
These are very nice. What sort of ISO speeds were you using.

It doesnt eat them, I just dont even worry about them cuz I always have one charging and two in the camera.

Here in SE Alaska we are all island comunities. When we have a basketball (or any sport for that matter) game a bunch of teams fly into one town and you play games all day. Each team usually plays two games a day. I end up at the games all day and shoot well over 2k shots a day. If I dont have my charger going its not like I can run home and pick it up between games or run down to the local stoare and buy a couple of others...either you have them or you dont...

I did leave my charger and one battery at the last place I shot at and it is being mailed. I have shot 4 games on the NON-recharged batteries and Christmas pictures and two Christmas concerts with my 24-105 IS so the batteries and XT do just fine...its more my anal personality that doesnt want to get caught without batteries I guess...LOL

Thanks. I am still trying to find what I like best with the cropping. I have the thing in my head that tells me I need the whole body, but then I see masters like Liza and Gman who crop things WAY in tight...and I like the look, but am having trouble letting go of my comfort zone...

Some nice images there Superdiver. I'm a big advocate of cropping as tight as I can. If I am going to lose say a foot, I'll change the crop and crop at a different level.

It looks like you stand taking pictures? If so, Try sitting on the floor if possible. You are then shooting up at the players so are more likely to get a face shot.

Feel free to crop any of those and see what you like better...

Yes, sometimes I sit and some I stand, depending on how mobile I want to be and how much room there is...
