If you already said you would do it for free, then I wouldn't all of a sudden ask them to pay for the images you are withholding. It might be a good idea to have a contract. You never know.

Clear the air and get things agreed upon before the day. Good paperwork (agreements) make good friends. I would feel much more at ease when shooting that day knowing there will not be a tiff or misunderstanding the following day about " your " work. My 2c.

I'm doing a wedding for a friend of a friend tomorrow, at a very good rate. I still made them sign a contract. I don't shoot without one, ever. Without a contract and a deposit I don't even write down a wedding date in my diary.

1400 pics is definitley a lot! although if you do the math... you're shooting from 9am-11pm, that's less than 2 pics a minute. that's a really long day, i don't envy you. I'd get a lot more cards!

i'm just afraid afterwards, my friend will ask me for the originals on behalf of her friend, B&G. my wife says i should say NO! and just give them 8x10 photos and about 200-300 at most. the rest, if they want they should pay me for it.

Uh, if you agreed to shoot for free, then going back afterwards and demanding they pay you for it is going to end the friendship, I guarantee. If a friend told me he was going to shoot my wedding for free and then gave me a fraction of the images he shot and said I had to pay for the rest I'd be PISSED OFF.

You need to have it ABSOLUTELY 100% CLEAR between the two of you what it is you're providing for free. Either your services are free and she will have to buy prints, or everything is free, or whatever. But do NOT shoot this wedding, then come back later and tell her you're not going to give her what she asks for unless she forks over money.

Karen

thanks for the inputs! yeah, i'm shooting it free, no doubt. i just don't want them to ask me for the RAW files. I don't expect them to pay for it either, but I will however ask them to sign a contract though. Since they are not my direct close friend, I'd definitely going to take Tim's and others contract advise.

i guess what i was trying to say before was, i don't want them to end up asking me for 1000 photos.. u know? that's crazy! at least for me it'll be. so i suppose i need to put that into my contract so the B&G will know how many they are getting and in return I have every right to use their photos for advertising, portfolio, etc.

any more tips and pointers? much thanks~~~

Honestly, I think 14 hours is kind of taking advantage of you, but it's up to you to decide what to do. Just make sure both of you understand what they'll get out of it (images on disc, etc.), and what you will do with the photos (put them in a portfolio, etc.).

thanks jessiper.. yeah i feel a bit taken advantage of as well. but guess i'll have to put it into the contract and make them sign it.. or else i won't be there. cuz i know even though they said sure it's ok for me to use the photos.. but just in case.

if they ask for the originals.. what should i give them? i'd think just high resolution photos of it woulld be sufficient, right? also, should i put in my contract that they are under no circumstances are they allow to edit my photos in anyway without my consent?

Give them low res as in good for viewing plus what ever photo's you agree too if they then want more they should pay, after all they have the pictures they want so you should be able to make a few dollars/pounds out of the family friends who might want a picture.

there is a fine line between being friends and having the pee taken out of you, after all it you who has the skill and they who need it.

just my small opinion for what its worth:lol:

martin.. you and my wife think alike. prior to this, they had wanted to see my work. and since i didn't have any portfolio, i said, let's go out and shoot and so you can see what kind of photos i can take of you and your future hubby. i gave them about close to 200 photo in the 800x600 res. but then they had ask my friend to ask me if they can have the high res. which i said fine.

but this time, it's different. cuz they've seen what i can shoot, so wify thinks, FREE shouldn't mean all the originals as well. it's tough.. but definitely i'll need to put all into contract. ;)

Always single shot. Wazza shot in rapid fire with me once, it created a bunch of duplicates and a bunch of work later.

My finger's pretty quick where necessary.

Nice tim.
I recall I only shot a few extra than yourself.

7 hour wedding I recently shot, I took around 500 shots, 300+ to use.

Anyway, 14Gb is plenty. :)
