According to this paper by Pentax, you can set it from 8-800mm, so I'm assuming that it can work at 800mm focal length. If true, it's pretty impressive.

but how much does it help at 800mm is the question.

According to them 2.5-4 stops. From reviews like dpreview and such about 2 stops. Nice feature to have for free imo.

If what they say is true and you can use 800mm lens with the SR, even one stop on a cropped body would lower your shutter speed from 1/1280 sec to 1/600, two stops would bring it even lower to 1/300.

doubt it's true, the area covered by the lens is too small to support 2 stops... maybe they mean 2.5-4 stops from 8-80mm, which would make sense... or maybe they mean 800mm lens on a tripod ;)

upon reading the article, i can understand the reason for the settings from 8-800, but this does not mean it will be equally effective at all ranges. main reason for those settings is due to the noticible vibrations (shorter lenses mean smaller, faster movements while longer lenses mean larger and slower movements).

No, they wrote 8-800mm, plus the SR cannot be used on tripods and must be turned off.
Maybe someone with a Pentax and a long lens here can test it out for us.

About time! I've been waiting to shoot 800mm handheld- I take pictures of things really far away at night and could really use a walkaround lens at that length.

(/sarcasm)

I like Pentax ... they are cool  One of my top three favourite lenses is a Pentax and some say amongst the very best 50mm's you can buy (for shooting rather than polishing obviously!) Yippee for Pentax. Slap Canon IS ass lads :-)

It isn't free. The K100D costs about $70 more than the K110D, which doesn't have SR

Nobody with more than half a brain cell attempts to hand hold an 800mm telephoto lens. One wonders who exactly that marketing drivel is aimed at.

I tried stacking a 1.4x and a 2x on my 300mm f/4L IS once for 1,344mm equivalent on my 30D. I handheld it with IS on. Image quality was substandard but hey, I filled the frame with a mall 5 and a half miles away...
