Wooooooooooow !!!.... Nice purchase, JoeGolf. I think this photography thing is starting to grow on you.
I have seen plenty of debate between buying tons of equipment, and not. To me, the first rule is affordability. If you did not have to sell your kid's lunch box to get these, I am happy for ya. Unfortunately I have seen two or three people in this forum drop serious money on a high end camera, three or four L lenses, and the usual accessories, thinking they could get to generate money taking photos fairly quickly. I was sad to see months later the FS (For Sale) ads in this same forum.
The second rule for me is simple, necessity. When the dad goes to the TBall game with a 1D and 400mm 2.8 L, I know he is either showing off, or has no idea of the true capabilities of his equipment. Maybe he is mapping his kid's moles, and he is catching up during the game. I have gone through three 50mm lenses, currently on my third copy. When this one goes bad, I will definitely think of going to 1.4 or even the L version. It all comes down to need. Do I need it?... And if I just want it, can I afford it?... RULE OF THUMB: If you lock your camera bag outside the wife's view, or if your empty lens boxes are piling up at the very bottom of the closet with those old college shoes, then there might be an issue.
Personally, I have tried to stay away from buying a lot, with the logic of getting one piece of equipment, and then using it thoroughly before making another purchase (this to avoid having 5 lenses and not knowing them personally, how they work for me, which ones I favor, and which one to pull when the call comes in to go cover something).
In all reality -and quite honestly- 2006 alone is a year that saw me go from my world of film to Digital, and from the 10Ds to 20 and 30D. From Tamron and Canon, I transitioned to an almost full Sigma set (10-22,24-70,70-200,50-500) with nice aperture values (All from the Film versions of 'the Brand which must not be named' -oink oink-).
So much for theory, huh... But the truth is that I did not go over my budget, I made the money back, and I am pretty happy with the equipment.
Now I have finally been selected for some Police training, as part of a career move I have working on for quite some time. The Photography equipment will have to sit in a closet most of the time (except for the walkabout camera, 20D with the 24-70). Had I purchased all this stuff and still be in debt, I would be kicking my teeth and typing this very message at the same time.
Anyhow, did not mean to write such a lengthy 'quick' reply.
Congrats on your new gear, it looks like an awesome setup, and keep on posting pictures!!..
Cheers,
