I don't use it a lot, but I certainly would never think of deleting it. You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

You can do that, and I often do. But my experience is that that works best when you add 100% to the canvas size, then crop back when you are done. Spherize does a ball shaped adjustment in the center of the canvas. By expanding the canvas, you place your entire shot within the adjustment area. Here is an extreme example to demonstrate what I mean.
- 2 Spherized.
- 3 Spherized WITH canvas extension.
- 4 The above cropped to previous (800x533) size.
