Goosenecks State Park, UT. near Mexican Hat, UT. The canyon is about 1000 feet deep. The San Juan river meanders back and forth, flowing for more than five miles while progressing only one linear mile toward the Colorado River and Lake Powell. The picture is stitched from 7 images taken with a 28mm lens on a Canon 5D. The picture is level, the horizon is real.

Some of the monuments of Monument Valley can been seen on the horizon just to the right of center.

Hello Jeff,

The shot makes me go WOW. You might want to chop a little off the top for it doesn't look balanced with the foreground. I'd also experiment with about a 2 degree clockwise rotation as it looks like your tripod wasn't 100% level on the X and Y axis. Initially the colour saturation looks "washed out", but upon further scrutiny I can see you are shooting into the sun. This "contre-jour (external link)" effect is very difficult to master if not impossible.

The wide view is quite stunning and considering what you were confronted with on that day, you did an excellent job. That would make an amazing wall poster, it certainly catches the eye.

Cousin... who has never been to Utah. :(

A nice, sharp shot, Jeff. That viewpoint frustrates me, as I want a full view of the gooseneck, but that ledge below the rim prevents it. Have you ever considered climbing down to that ledge to shoot the scene?

Win, thanks. I still owe you a call about hiking to the Wave. I'm going to try to call tomorrow.

Cousin, thanks for the compliments and sugestions. The pano head was level and vertical. The landscape is interesting for the varying horizon. Unfortunately the horizon is seldom horizontal.

Stan, thanks. I did consider walking out a bit past the wall, but it made me nervous. The ground looked very loose and there is a slope. I think it would really be a great position for a picture, but I think I'd like to be rigged with a safety harness before moving to the edge there.

Jeff,

Great shot. I've only been to that area once, but didn't get to see the Goosenecks as it was getting dark and we still had to get down to Goulding's Trading Post for the night. You're pano makes me want to get back during the daylight. Did you go down the Moki Dugway to the Valley of the Gods? That was an awesome drive.

Thanks for posting your picture.

Dennis U.

My thoughts too Jeff, but I can definitely understand your reluctance to go near the edge of what looks to be a bit unstable.

Jeff, I confess to being unwilling to go out there without some safety device. My shots all have the same ledge blocking the scene.

DennisU, thanks for the compliments. I came from Hanksville on Utah 95 to 261 and the Moki Dugway. 95 is really spectacular when it follows the Dirty Devil River and crosses the Colorado River, an interesting drive.

Thanks John and Mark.

Jeff
