My wife recently started coaching a high school dance team so I will have plenty of opportunities to improve. Tonight I wanted to test my Sigma 120-300, as I recently got it back from Sigma service for some backfocusing issues. I learned very quickly that it was WAY too long for basketball. In the future I will probably use the 70-200.

I didn't end up with very many keepers tonight, mostly due to the length of the lens. But I have time to make improvements.

This is the only shot that I felt like working on tonight. It was shot wide open at ISO 800 and 1/400. I adjusted curves and sharpened slightly. I probably should have run a little noise reduction as well, but I am lazy tonight:oops: .

Any CC is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
Travis

Awesome shot. Love the faces. I do think theres a bit too much negative space up top though. I would crop in more to emphasize the two subjects and the contact.

Whoa, i haven't seen you around Travis. I missed ya. I'd kick up the ISO to 1600 so you could at least do more of 1/500. If you slightly exposre to the right, you'll kill off some of the noise easier.

I'd crop tighter. #42 doesn't need to fully be in the image. And you don't need the guy who's passing the ball to be fully in the frame. You can cut off the legs in this case as the defender gives perspective in this.

BTW, i do have more UCLA cheerleader photos now.

Thanks for the comments, I agree with the crop. I almost posted a cropped version but opted for the full imae instead, so that I could get opinions on the crop.

Hey Grego, it's nice to hear from you. I have been rather busy with the family lately plus I started going back to the gym (I was getting a little chunky and very weak:( ) so I have been limited in my free time. Plus, my employer decided to block POTN. I don't know what in the heck they were thinking that would accomplish:lol: .

I agree with the cropping (see above). I was a little nervous to go to ISO 1600, but next time I will give it a shot.

So, where is the link to these alleged cheerleader photos? Or is it something that you have to send via e-mail ;) .

I'll talk to you later to catch up and see how things are going with you. I have to go X-mas shopping and have my daughters' dance recital to attend, so I'll IM you either later today of tomorrow.

I have a whole bunch from that sequence. I just finished my finals yesterday, and so I can relax and organize my photos finally.

Dude,........... very nice shots! Have you ever tried to submit to SI? And, no, that is not a joke. I loved every one of those shots up until number 10 (for some reason the flash locked up at 10.)

I hope to post some shots tomorrow of the girls dance recital (again testing the "fixed" 120-300). If you see them, feel free to and please do leave feedback and tips. ( I need them ).
