I would be terrified to use that thing! Is it truly that steady?

In a word, "No!". There is another thread here about the Gorillapod to which I have already replied and put in a link to my thoughts on another forum....

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=183414

Long story short, it is just about OK if you balance the centre of gravity of the kit directly over the top of the support but if you tilt the camera/lens/flash, especially forwards, it will just keep on going. I think the whole contraption would stay locked on to its own support, rather then drop to the floor altogether (unless you really pushed your luck), but you don't really have much control over the camera angle - it basically has to point wherever it balances OK. There is a more robust version of the Gorillapod called the Zoom model but I haven't seen or tried that. I really just posted for a bit of a grin as everyone else was posting heavy duty stuff ;)

p.s. without the grip and flash I guess it might do a bit better. I just loaded it up a bit to prove it could be done :)

There is nothing wrong with the gorilla pod. I use mine all the time. It is not a replacement for a regular tripod, but used within its limitations it is great. Do not try to put a 30D with a 70-200 and 580 ex on it, it will not hold. My main use has been for those times when a tripod was absolutely out of the question. I also use it with the video camera.
