David - If I recall correctly you're shooting in very poor light conditions. If so and for you to capture good faces like you've done here through masks (especially the plastic one in #3) shows your skill. Very well done!

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Mark -- thank you. indeed the weather is beautiful, though we were planning a ski trip which won't happen. sunny and warm is nice, though, while it lasts.

Jerry - ISO1600, 1/500, f2.8 thanks for the kind words, I still recall you helped me understand how to setup servo focus on the 1D.

Lacks - thanks. my son (the defence in shot 1, above) says that if you were a lacrosse photographer you could change your name to LAX-focus. thought I'd share.

Nice work!! Using ISO 1600, is there alot of noise viewing at 100%? I'm trying to get a grasp on shooting hockey pics and trying to understand more.

Rachelle -- thanks. the noise depends on the exposure. Dark areas show more noise. So at 1600 and 3200, you have to expose as far to the right as possible without overexposing the ice. >>> Here <<< is a thread with shots at both 1600 and 3200. Below are a couple of 100% crops at 1600. You see two shots with slightly different exposure (different parts of the arena).

For me the bottom line is that keeping the shutter speed fast enough to freeze motion is more important than lowering the noise. Peewees = 1/320, Bantam = 1/400-1/500, midgets & adult B-level = above 1/500. Dial in the minimum acceptable shutter, open your lens wide, and then pick an ISO that moves the ice bump in the histogram to the far right.

good luck,

Thanks so much for the repost and link, it really helps me understand better. The lenses in my sig is all I have for now, which would you recommend me trying to use...until I get something more suitable...or...am I doomed...

30D + 85 f1.8

the focal length is a little short for hockey, but I've shot a game with a borrowed 100mm f2. Get in the penalty box, wear a helmet, and shoot when the action is in neutral ice (they'll be close enough to you at that point). You'll have to be quick.

f2 and close is difficult because of the thin depth of field. Maybe keep the lens at 2.8

good luck.

rachhellen, I'd recommend a Canon 70-200L f2.8 or Sigma's 70-200 f2.8. These lenses will give you reach and nice low light shots. You have an advantage with your 30D cause your ISO range is wider. Try to shoot in between ISO 800-1600. Also I'd recommend you use a Custom White Balance. Take a shot of the freshly cleaned Ice surface and use that picture to set your Custom White Balance. Doing this will help get you natural ice color in your pictures.

I'm shooting in M mode at f4.5 at 250/sec 1600 ISO, that works best for me cause I'm using a lens not made to shoot indoor sports(28-105). Also I'm shooting with a Rebel XT which doesn't offer any ISO speeds between 800-1600. The closer to ISO 800 you can get the better, you'll have less noise.

Until I get my 70-200 f2.8, it's gonna be hit and miss for me. You don't get may keepers without a low light lens.

Here's one of mine...........

DavidEB- Nice shots. Hey what lens did you use for these pics?

Snapman -- 70-200 f2.8 -- I think you're walking the same path I did. As the kids get bigger and skate faster, you need higher shutter speeds, and that means more expensive glass.

If you expose properly, ISO1600 is fine.
