The 30D is a superb camera...no need to upgrade it.

Buy the 10-22 EF-S and the 24-105 EF IS L. I can atest to the strength of the 10-22 EF-S...its a great performer. By reputation so is 24-105 EF IS L :) This lens combo gives you superb coverage from 10MM to 105MM.

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!
7D, G5X, 10-22MM EF-S, 17-55MM f/2.8 EF-S IS, 24-105MM f/4 EF L, Leica D-Lux 7

Thanks for that. I think that's what I really wanted to do - your comments have persuaded me. I think I'll add either the 70-200 f4L or the new(ish) 70-300 f4.5. What do you think?

Go for the L. Constant aperture is a beautiful thing.

Thanks to both of you for your advice - I think I take your advice and just get the lenses. By the way, cgratti, are you pleased with your 70-200 f4 - and do you miss IS?

I am more than happy with the f/4 without IS. I find even at 200mm my shots are sharp and I dont have a need for IS. If and when I buy a lens longer than 200mm I will want the IS, but as of now I can steadly hold my 70-200 without the need for IS.

Is you want a super wide lens, don't count out the Sigma 10-20mm. It is an amazing lens. I had it and sold it when I got the 17-40L, wish I would have kept it. It's on my list of future lenses to buy again.

For the OP, I'd stick with the 30D and go for the glass upgrades. Your stellar glass will far outlast the ever-changing bodies on the market.

Would you buy the Sigma and still keep your 17-40, or dump it? (curious as I have a thread going on this topic now)

30D is a fine camera. It's glass that makes a huge difference.

They say a picture is worth a thosand words. This was taken with a 30D tonight(#1 UCLA Bruins vs Oakland). You can interpret. :)

Nice shot grego. Now if you have a pic from the front too, then everything would be peachy. :) To the OP - wait on the camera and get the lens - though don't forget that if you buy from the store in NY in person, you'll be hit with sales tax (and a lot of it at $1800 worth of gear). It might be more cost effective to ship if you don't mind the wait.

I'm sure I do. I just haven't had time to go through all of it. :)

I'm glad I started this thread - I've got a lot of really useful information from you guys. But why are you all from North America - aren't there any Brits with opinions? (Perhaps it's the wrong time of day over here!)

Don't the web prices include sales tax? And, as I will be bringing the lenses back to England, will I not get them tax free?

Web prices are before tax. If you order from another state, it is not incurred. However they do apply if you order it from within the state and will show in the final pricing before payment. Aside from some exceptions, sales tax are intra-state only for each state. You will have to pay for the tax because you paid for the lens in the state of NY. But if you're going to bring it back to England, yeah it probably would be worth purchasing in NY and paying the sales tax rather than ordering and sent to England along with incurring a fatty VAT.

Currently, the sales tax is at 8.375% in B&H's district.

No offence to you Americans (I holiday in your country every year!) but it's nice to hear an English voice, if that's the right way of putting it, on this forum.

Bildeborg - I agree with your sentiment about being proud to be English - except for....
