For the 5D, you probably need Cokin's UWA holder, not their regular holder, and even then it might not be wide enough (I don't have the 17-40; my Sigma 15-35 doesn't take a filter holder, so I can't try it for you). Better check with them before you order. If they'll sell you the UWA (or if you want to get it separately) it looks like you're considering the right stuff. My preference for a starter grad set (influenced by the late Galen Rowell) is a 2 stop (0.6) and a 3 stop (0.9), one soft and one hard.

Why get the "tobacco" grad? Just set your camera's WB to the warm side.

Its hard to tell if you want a graduated ND filter set up, not a straight ND (all same density) filter? The package you have spec'ed out is fine for yor 17-40. However, I would consider a 3 stop soft and 2 stop hard combination, you can use them together too. I actually find the HiTech hards to be fairly "soft" in actual use. Remember to use the stop down dof preview button to set the location of the filter while looking through the viewfinder.

Just ordered these from Karlu (UK).

Order Details:

1 x 0.6ND GRAD (LFRF003) = £45.39
Filter Type Hard Grad

1 x 0.6ND GRAD (LFRF003) = £45.39
Filter Type Soft Grad

1 x Foundation Kit (LF001) = £43.35

1 x 0.9ND GRAD (LFRF005) = £45.39
Filter Type Hard Grad

1 x 77mm Wide Adapter Ring [LFAD018] = £28.94

Sub-Total: £208.46

I found that on a FF body the std Cokin holder caused Vignetting below about 28mm. Don't know what the WA holder is like but I've heard it still causes some Vignetting (not seen it personally, so not verified).

About $400. Expensive I know but I believe it's worth paying for quality which should last a lifetime if looked after properly.

It's not how much kit you have, it's what you do with it that counts.......but at least L glass LOOKS good !!:D
