2x Converter trial - not too happy, any ideas?

These few pics are a couple from my 1st full outing with my Teleplus MC7 teleconverter on my 400D with my 75-300mm f4 - 5.6, The pics seem very "soft" The few i didnt use it for on the day actually turned out better cropped then the uncropped 2x ones. Any ideas or solutions? Or should I just put it back on Ebay? Auto focus doesnt really work, which doesn't concern me but the picture quality appears to be suffering greatly. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. The pictures attatched are all uncropped and totally untouched in terms of post production. Please help!!!?

I had one of these and I wasn't happy either. I put it on Ebay and traded up to the Sigma TC, which I find works great with my 300 2.8L. Still tempted to try the Canon though.

I think that's about the best you can hope for out of that combo unfortunately.

Seems to me most of problems are around exposure selection. Everything seems dulled out - no faces and no details. I would work on that before you throw out 2X

Can't speak from experiene, but everything I've read/heard suggest users are much happier with the 1.4.

AF isn't going to happen i'm afraid. With the TC fitted your lens becomes f8 at best and the 400D AF won't work on a lens with a max. aperture of f5.6 or greater.

Added to that the 75-300 isn't the world's greatest lens to start with and you're asking a bit too much.

Not sure exactly what settings you'd suggest? These were as shar[as I could seem to manage. The pic I've attatched is one I've aharpened on photoshop. But I'd love any in camera suggestions Jubilee? Thanks

I agree with GSH. You need a lens with a very high IQ to begin with.

hell, you need an f2.8 lens to begin with... if you want the 140-600mm, get a superzoom point and shoot, or buy an f2.8 lens like teh sigma 120-300. if not, you're not going to get much out of having an slr over a point and shoot

what is "Teleplus" - is that some no-name brand or am I missing something.

Anyway. The 75-300 is known to be soft above 200mm on its own, and a telconverter simply amplifies that. If you truly want to use a 2x teleconverter with AF, then you need a lens at f/2.8 for your camera, or f/4 for a 1 series (they AF at f/8)

Your asking too much of the lens.

I also noticed you shot in the sports mode. The first thing you should do is understand how exposure works and get out of the auto modes. Shoot Av or Tv for this kind of thing. It gives you more control, allows you to shoot RAW if you want and it allows much more control of ISO's etc.

Given the combo you had for the photos, I think you did pretty good actually. 2x is just no good on a zoom lens no matter what brand, in my opinion.

Like I said, it's just my opinion -- based on my experience using the 2x on my 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS. With the 2x on my 100-400, with the IS turned on and on a monopod, the combo seems to yield better results, but I wouldn't use the combo for any fast action sports shots.
