I use a 2X on my 70-2002.8IS and really enjoy it though it certainly isn't perfect. As said above I think to give it the best shot I have to shoot RAW and manual. RAW gives a better opportunityto pull out some dark shadows that I can't seem to do in jpeg.

I thought your shots were fine, trust me, I am no pro at this. To me, it 'looks' as if you were auto exposing on the overall background leaving some of the players a bit underexposed. If I knew more about retrieving EXIF info on postings I might be of more help. I have an older 70-300 that I sometimes use alongside the faster zoom and the difference in detail is startling at equivalent apertures. If I get any good shots with high sun I consider myself very lucky.

Hi again guys, I really appreciate all of the feedback. I guess it's obvious I'm still learnng a lot. I think in future I'll just use the 75-300 lens alone. The few i did take seemed to come out a lot better cropped than when i used the converter. I know this is a pretty shonky set up and my main idea was to have something to use until i could afford a decent 400 or 500mm lens. It looks as though patience is the key! Thanks a lot once again and I'm always open to more feedback! :)

The Canon 1.4X and 2X extenders were manufactured for Canon's Super Telephoto lenses (300mm and up). Anything short of that is a huge compromise and just an experiment on the part of the user. The only exception being the 1.4X on the 70-200 2.8 lens. The Image Quality is just not there with most of the experimental combinations. YMMV.

Butcha27,

when you try it again, try to use f/8 on the lens. That should yield a sharper image and give you more leeway with focus accuracy.
Take a look HERE (external link) for examples of the image quality of the 70-200/2.8 IS lens when using a 2x third-party teleconverter (Tamron/Kenko teleplus).

The interesting fact to me is that the brand of the TC obviously does not impact the result as much as the magnification ... I saw a test where all 1.4x TCs (including the no-name ones) clearly outperformed the 300$ Canon 2x TC.

Best regards,
Andy
