What makes a 20D better than an XTi?

Build quality
Pentaprism vs. pentamirror
3x faster autofocus
Command dial
5fps vs. 3fps
etc
etc
etc

There's a very complete comparison on Bob Atkins' site.

So it seems like the 20D is built a little better than the XTi, as far as shutter speed max and such, but is it worth $200 more?

magnesium body, upper display, thumb wheel, ISO 3200, 1/8000 and I'm sure there is more.

So much of photography in the moment is about feel and handling. Sure, the 350 or 400 are decent cameras but I notice the average handling with each shot. I bought my 350D strictly for travel. I sold it for the 30D for day to day use. It is worth the extra. The 20D, if you can find one at a good price, either new or low mileage second hand, will be a great purchase.

condy: I justified my XTi purchase the same way you thought about your XT.

now I want something bigger and more bad-ass. lol

don't get me wrong. my XTi is fabulous, and I still have MUCH to learn, but after adding the grip to the XTi, it feels so much more solid and easier to handle. I thought the 30D was 'too big' for me, but after going back and looking at it again after a couple months with the XTi, I think I would be happier with the 30D.

I'm teetering on selling my XTi now for the upgrade and taking a loss =\

I'll have to borrow a friend's 30D for a day and see how I like it though

Yup ... grip is essential for many IMO if you use a 350/400. The 30D doesn't really need one. I bought one with my camera and only used it a few times. Sold it. Handles perfectly to me as is. I don't intend upgrading until it stops working or breaks. I just don't need any more than it has feature wise.

Do you think I should upgrade from an XT to an XTi or a 20D, or just spend my money on a new lens. The lady at the photo store let me look through a 10-20mm lens i think it was a pretty nice lens, then again, I only looked throught that one. I have a 18-55, 50mm, and a 75-300mm, I think that 10-20mm will complete my collection.

The one I looked through is a Sigma lens. Price was around $600

how old is your XT? and would a new body benefit you more than a new lens?

Is there any reason to upgrade your body? (do you need the 1/8000, ISO3200, shutter life, etc)

if not, get the lens.

Rough crowd. It's your money, so spend it as you like. I don't think anyone would argue that you'd be sorry with the XTi if you want a new camera. It's just that it might be money not efficiently spent, but I'm sure all of us have us (even those telling you not to buy the XTi) have wasted money on new toys we might not have really needed, but that we really wanted.

I am debating upgrading from the original Digital Rebel to the XTi or the 30D. I wanted to get the 30D last summer, but never did, and now the smaller size of the XTi is attractive to me, despite the loss in functionality (command dial, spot-metering). I think there would trips where I would leave the 30D home and take my A600 series cameria, that I might not leave the XTi home for.
