I just purchased a 30d, but it seems really noisy and a couple of my pictures are exhibiting wierd artifacts in this case the hair where my 350d didn't seem to do...this was only shot at iso640

I was wondering if I got a defective 30d and if i should return it for a different one or if it's just a matter of technique. thanks

well i think you should take a pic thats actually exposed properly and in focus before you judge its ISO noise

The pic is way under exposed. what is noisy? the shutter? There is no way around that with a SLR. Welcome to potn. If you could be more specific, I am sure we can help.

Nathan,

welcome to the forum :D!

As you have certainly learned from others' (maybe a bit harsh  ) reactions, the settings for the image you have posted are far from optimal for judging whether the camera is working properly.

Which shooting mode and settings do you normally use on your 350D?
Try to start with something that you are familiar with - and not exactly under such challenging conditions.
Try to get the same image with the same aperture/exposure on your 350D and compare the results. They should actually be nearly undistinguishable, as the sensors of the 350D and 30D are nearly alike.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here on the forum.
Normally, the lot here is quite friendly and helpful.

Best regards,
Andy

BreezeBrowser shows me 50 mm, 1/13 and f/2.2 ... which seems to me a 'normal' setting for taking a very low light image with the 50/1.8.

Try to take an image under 'normal conditions' ... this would be more appropriate for judging camera quality.

Best regards,
Andy

ISO 640 - Fairly High, this will introduce a bit of noise.
1/13th sec - Slow shutter speed would account for the blur.
f/2.2 - Almost wide open so fairly shallow depth of field.

A typical indoor shot with not enough light :-(

The image looks underexposed so at ISO640 will show a fair bit of noise - As others have said take a test image in good daylight.
