A710 having problems connecting

Hi All

Last weekend I purchased a A710is . After installing the software and connecting the camera, Windows XP (Explorer) recognises the camera as a "Canon PowerShot A710 IS", but no drive letter is associated with the camera. When I start up ZoomBrowser EX (V5.7) and then try to connect to the camera via "Aquire & Camera Settings" > "Aquire Images from Memory card", nothing happens , I also cannot connect to the camera via "Connect to the Camera" I have a SD card reader, when I use this with ZoomBrowser EX I can select "Aquire & Camera Settings" > "Aquire Images from Memory Card" and then Zoombrowser opens up the image window.
I have a Nikon D70, when I use this camera with ZoomBrowser I can download my photos via "Aquire Images from Memory Card". The Nikon D70 appears as a drive letter within Windows explorer (When connecting the D70 directly to the USB port).
It appears that Windows XP is not assigning a drive letter to the A710IS, could someone confirm if a drive letter should be assigned ?
Has anyone else got any suggestions to fix this problem.
(BTW, I have already removed RealPlay 10, searching Google I have found a few people with a similar problem).

Canon's current cameras don't present themselves to the computer as mass storage devices (drives), rather as image acquisition devices (scanners or cameras), so it shouldn't have a drive letter.

Did you install the software and camera exactly, step-by-step, like Canon said to? Do you have another image capture device (scanner, another camera) installed? Is your cable good?

I believe I installed the camera step by step, but I'll start again anyway and follow the manual.

I have a canon 3000F Scanner installed, I've disconnected it from the PC, but still no luck.

I previously had a Canon A40 camera, before installing the new A710, I removed all the software (ZoomBrowser) from XP. There seem to be a couple of threads on this forum for the same issue .

AH - ISTR there are issues with uninstalling/reinstall​ing later versions. I generally prefer to d/l the "upgrade" from Canon's web site rather than install a new version which assumes clean registry, etc. I believe, but can't recall the specifics, that there's some trash left over in the registry.

Maybe your USB ports are Full, try to insert only the USB that is attach to your camera. (of course it doesnt include the mouse or keyboard.) c",)

The camera now connects via the CameraWindow or via ZoomBrowser EX.

Here are the steps I used -

1. Remove all the Canon Camera software (Including ZoomBrowser) via Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

2. Manually delete the ZoomBrowser directory structure under C:/Program Files/Canon/ZoomBrowse​r EX

3. Reboot Windows XP

4. Disconnect USB Canon 3000F scanner

5. Install Canon software as per the Software Starter Guide

6. Reboot Windows XP

7 Log into Windows and connect Camera to USB port then power on.

When prompted for the application, I selected ZoomBrowser EX and then connect to the camera.

I'm not sure if it was the installation process, the left over ZoomBrowser EX files or the removal of the USB scanner that caused my issues. I'll try and reconnect the scanner and see if the camera still connects.
