I picked it up in my local shop for $360.00. I know that's at least $30.00 higher than most of the online pricing, but I believe in supporting my local shop whenever I can. They do a lot for the local photographers here in SW Florida. I had been bouncing back and forth between this one and the Gitzo, but decided to go with the Manfrotto instead. I'll be using it with a 488 RC2 head, and it will primarily see duty with my 1DSMII and the 100-400 L mounted on it. Seems like most of the folks who own this unit from the forum here really like it, so I feel good about this buy.

Good for you!
Too many people obsess over a few dollars savings when it comes to supporting local businesses. I buy a lot of products from B&H and some from Adorama, but if I need a hands-on experience or something expensive like lenses that I may have to exchange, local brick and mortars are where I spend my money. I pay several hundred dollars premium on expensive lens purchases, but like you, I feel that it is well worth it.
People use their local brick and mortars for demos and then turn around and make their purchases on-line. People that are short-sighted over the few dollars savings will be the first ones to cry when the local stores are gone because of on-line pricing.

That's a reasonable markup to go the B&M way.

Thanks for the replies. FWIW, what I usually do is go into the shop having done my homework. I have developed a good relationship with them, and they seldom stock what I'm after anyway. Their primary demographic target is the "point and shoot" crowd. However, many of the products that they are starting to stock (this tripod included) are coming as a result of input from the photographers like me who frequent their shop, and give them input on what they'd like to see. I have a good enough relationship with them that I tell them what the going price is on the web, and ask them how close they can come to that. Of course I expect to pay more at B&M, and we mutually understand that. I try to give them the opportunity to order things for me whenever I can. IMHO, anyone who doesn't spend some time (and money) in the local shop is really missing out. I meet a lot of good photographers there, and the owners/employees all know me by first name. I've gotten invaluable advice there more times than I can count. Being new to this area (only lived here a year now), I'd still be trying to figure out all the good local spots had it not been for these relationships. I'm sure that I'm much further ahead of people who have lived here longer because I've befriended my local shop.

Do I always buy there? Of course not. But, I sincerely do try and give them "first crack" at the deal. They respect that. I also give them a considerable amount of business.

I think I'll be overwhelmed with joy when a major consumerish store in my area is going to go out of business. lol

I don't beleive in trowing money against the forces of evolution.

Last I checked B&H was a brick and mortar in an area with some of the highest rent you'll ever see.

While I certainly respect Doc Frankenstein's opinion, I sincerely hope I never see the demise of B&M. There will never be a substitute for hands-on experiences. I love doing things like spending the evening in a Barnes and Noble bookstore, drinking expensive coffee and reading whatever suits me that day. I usually buy something when I go, although I read a lot of stuff there that I don't buy. I know I could buy the same books online at least 10 percent (and usually more) cheaper from Amazon.com, but who cares! To each his own, I guess.
