I'm finally tired of my nasty remote switch and I want something a little more flexible. This will mainly be of use for long (>30") exposures, so a way of either locking the shutter open, or a timer is mandatory.

The Canon TC-80N3 would seem to be ideal, but it ain't cheap.

Are there any other more cost-effective alternatives out there?

I have the Canon version as well as a couple copies of the "ebay" cheapies (which I bought strictly for the purpose of cutting up and adding 100 feet of extra wire to). There is a tremendous difference in the build quality of the Canon vs the aftermarket switches. You would be quite satisfied with the Canon switch, I am sure. Just get it and forget about the price as soon as you can.

Many thanks, Skip. Sound advice there. I just pressed the button on one.

Just a bit of explaining to the little lady that she won't be getting something as expensive as she's expecting at Christmas...!

Quick final question. What sized batteries does that unit take?

Hi Pete,
Got mine this summer. Just couldn't stand the price, really hurt to spend that on a remote.
It is a great, well built tool. I wouldn't be without it now.
