Dec 20, 2006 06:34 | #1 Not really looking for C&C on this shot, but rather for help in identifying the species. The closest thing I can find in my books is Song Sparrow, but this bird does not have the distinctive dark mark on the side of the throat. Any suggestions?

It is a interesting photo, with the cattails fading into the background. I'll bet you could enhance this shot a lot. Dennis

Of course that is what it is! I have hundreds of shots of Red-winged Blackbirds, male and female, and there is no doubt about what this is. I got it in my mind when I took it that it was a sparrow, and never looked back. Of course, any bird on a cattail is a candidate for a RWB! Thanks for waking me up! I didn't do a lot of PP with this shot, just some Shadow/Highlight adjustment in PS. It was extremely backlit, and a lot of the detail in the bird was virtually impossible to see in the original image. Perhaps that's why I didn't recognize it as a blackbird at first.
