How do you have your monopod positioned (relative to the ground and also to your legs)? Also, how do you have your legs positioned while using your monopod?

Thanks in advance

My monopod (see sig below) adjusts its height by simple trigger motion. It's a really convenient feature, and I use it all the time. It's indispensable when your shooting circumstances require that you move around a lot.

i try to keep the monopod as vertical as possible, using the head for any adjustments i need. Ill have my legs shoulder-width apart, left hand bracing the upper most leg section. I have also kept my monopod in hand as a possible makeshift weapon while walking down some shady areas of Minneapolis.. ill leave one leg unlocked, and within 1 second can have the leg extended and locked, ready for swinging a nice 1lb metal head mounted to a 3 foot pole (havent had to use it yet though :-) )

Hmmm... actually interesting question because it's never occurred to me to think about it....

Heaviness is relative, so all I can say is that it's heavier than a typical umbrella but less than a household hammer. It's just never occurred to me. Oh, I also use it as a hiking stick...

EDIT: It's 1.19 lbs according to: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/product/5523/BO3245/REG/397 (external link)

I use my monopod in many ways, depending on the situation. That's why I have a ball head on the top rather than just screwing the camera to the monopod.

I might stand up with the monopod's foot between my two feet and have the monopod fairly vertical - a classical position.

I might be sitting waiting for a particular bird or beast to come to a position that I am ready to photograph it (I could have said "shoot" it, but I'm into firearms too so that didn't sound right). The monopod could be at a 30° to 40° angle to the ground, with the foot of the monopod out in front of where I am sitting.

The monopod might be off to one side if I am in a wierd position such as atop boulders or something like that.

Bottom line - be prepared for using a monopod in many different ways, even as a hiking stick at times. Don't limit yourself to just the classic "stand up behind it" mode.

i'm typically shooting sports when using my monopod. so i'm generally running up and down the field and shoot from one knee. generally when shooting rugby league, i wear a plastic capped kneepad on my right side because i've often dropped to my knee to shoot while running and it lets me slide to a stop without falling or hurting myself :)

if i'm shooting surfing, i'm generally standing up with legs slightly spread. i don't use a head on my monopods. i just orient the body portrait or landscape with the tripod collar on the lenses.
