When I got my 1st slr (350d) I never gave separate insurance a serious thought apart from when travelling, just figured my house contents will cover. Now that's my gear is starting to mount up I've started thinking about insuring sparately, it's a bit of a mental hurdle as I don't go out with my gear as much as I'd like so I don't consider it at much risk and insurance isn't cheap. So I'm doing a poll for enthusiasts only. I figure people only start thinking about insureing separately after buying more than the body and kit lens so I've used an arbitrary figure of £1000 or $2000 to differentiate.

I got my insurance after getting my 5D and realised that my home uinsurance won't cover single items over £1500. I think i pay £160 p/a (for £4000 of cover), worth it for the peace of mind tbh :) The way i looked at it is i pay £600 per year for my car insurance and my car is worth slightly less than my gamera gear, £160 is a bargain if you look at it like that ;)

I have a rider on the insurance policy I have for my office (not a photography office). I use my camera for work sometimes and keep it in my office over night most nights. The same rider covers my laptop, cell phone and the other electronics in the office. Costs about US$150 per year.

Mine is covered 'all risks' under my (rather expensive) home content policy.

I am just in the process of reviewing my arrangements for insurance, after haphazardly adding up the cost of all my kit whilst bored in a meeting!! I was a little shocked and as a result will be moving that swiftly off the household insurance!!

For the UK chaps out there - which companies do you recommend?

My insurance agent told me I was covered up to $5,000; including while traveling. I just added some L lenses bringing my cost to about $6,000 so may have to look into special coverage.

Have more gear than ever planned before joining the forum. Now I have insurance that covers everything and then some. Must have it for shooting even as an enthusiast here in the area.

Just an enthusiast with way too much gear but I've got it all covered. I feel so much better now and don't worry about it wherever I take it.

Yes. I also have a separate $18,000 policy on my gear. It covers everything from drops to theft.

Same with me. I didn't worry about insurance when i had a 350D. Then I went mad and got my 5D and 2 Ls and decided that I should really think about some sort of insurance.

That seems a good very good price for all your gear, I might give them a buz.
