I've started to get some decent lenses and accessories but have the old 300D so still not thinking of insuring when I am out and about but do insure for a duration when I take them abroad.

I haven't found a decent photography insurer who does not charge 25% - 50% excess when travelling abroad.

What is the typical excess on a £2000 (about $4000) policy? The best I have seen is 12% excess local and 25% excess international. And they only provide new for old if kit is less than two years old.

Have you also checked what "proof of purchase" they require? I don't have the reciept for my 300D, don't know where I put it  !

Mine falls under valuable assets and as such has a floater. It covers everything from dropping to theft to whatever. It's cheap as chips too!

I just add it on to the household all risks section.

In fact as I never carry it all at once I split the cover between all risks and high risk contents.

Sorry to bring up this forum again but I have an important question about renter's insurance.

I have renter's insurance, covered with my xt + +vertical grip + 50mm 1.8 + 75-300mm lens and my apartment. If I add another camera, which I want to do, do you think they will drop me because it seems like i'm a professional?

Or should I look into insurance for a business insurance?(altho I don't have one) or will it be a out of this world preimum?

For you folks who have your equipment insurance attached to your homeowners insurance - is there any issue with that insurance going up if you make a claim? I'd be a little worried about that, since you hear horror stories about people not being able to get affordable homeowners insurance after making claims. I'd hate to put everything I own, and the house I'm in, at risk over a few items. Is that a legitimate concern?

That is likely to be an issue with any insurace, even for your cat.

looking at redoing my insurance..at the moment its covered on personal possesions but only up to £3000 with a limit of £1000 on any single item. just a quick look at the cost of replacing my equipment. looks like its going over that amount ,time to look at more insurance...oh yeah must get serial numbers and photos incase (god forbid) something happens to it

True, but I guess the question then is whether to insure the equipment with a completely separate policy, so as not to take a chance on affecting the homeowners insurance. It sounds like alot of people opt for the homeowners insurance path, which to me is just a little scary. There aren't a lot of options if you become uninsurable due to making claims.

I am not sure it would matter. You have to tell your other insurers of any material facts, such as being uninsurable or having had lots of claims on another policy. They will still take your money, but if they find out you have not told them everything when you claim you may run into problems.

Plus you can also run into double indemnity issues if the two insurers coverage has an overlap, they can then just keep saying claim from the other one.

So keeping it under one policy may be easier. You probably needs some all risks cover for general stuff anyway. Just add the camera stuff onto that.
