My son had his first Junior Varsity (7th & 8th grade) wrestling match last night. He pinned his adversary in the 3rd period. He weighs 190 lbs, but wrestles in the 215 lb. class. It's a little scary because he's much bigger than I am and now knows how to fight!!! LOL

C&C welcomed to get better shots next meet.

BTW, my son is in the RED tights.

Looks like your boy was gettin' the job done! Nice shots too. My only suggestion/feedback would be to possibly straighten the images so that the bleachers are horizontal, or possibly the edge of the mat.

Were these with your 85/1.8? Would you mind sharing the EXIF info? I'm assuming no flash based on the direction of the shadows?

Straightened out the photos a little, much better now, thanks....

I did use the 85 for this. I just got it and wanted to test it out.

I can't believe he is only in 7/8th grade. I thought for sure this was high school wrestling. He is a big kid that can put the hurts on someone. Nice job on the photos and keeping them crisp. I think the hardest part of wrestling is getting the expression as they move so fast. You did a good job with the 85.

Thanks for the kind words. He just turned 15 in early December, he towers over me, i'm 5'7" and he's 6'2", Ha Ha. He has been hitting the weights hard for a few months now, all he needs is the experience since he only wrestled for 2 years.

I am loving this 85, I can't wait to get out to more matches and shoot more with it. Do you Use AI Servo? Should I use all the focus points or just the middle one?

Looks good for a first outing with a lens. I would be happy. My only nit, and this is a matter of personal preference, is the shots look a little too ninjafied (denoised) for my taste. Skin tones are really smooth. I know most kinds this age don't usually show a lot of definition, but I would have expected a little more even in the heavy guys. Again though, just my taste - perhaps you didn't even de-noise these.

Cheers - and congrats on your son.... looks like a hulk of a kid.

cgratti - Your pictures are great. Nice depth of field, sharp focus on athletes, good color. You asked about using AI Servo and whether to use all the focus points or just the middle one. Did you use AI Servo? Which focus points? What do you find consistently works the best for focusing at wrestling matches? Thanks.
