Hello,
I just got my XTi a couple of weeks ago and am learning about using the DSLR. I got great results with my old Canon G5...so I stayed with canon. Anyway...check out the 2 photos below. They actually turned out pretty decent using the 18-55 kit lens. I've got a long way to go...but this camera will definatly assist me with my hobby

Love the sharpness of the first (bloody power lines, they are everywhere). The B&W conversion is good.

The B&W looks so much better blown up. Its a bit fuzzy and soft at the small size.

Love the first one! Even with the powerlines there!

The second does nothing to me: it seems not properly focused and doesn't suggest anything to me.

The first one is quite a powerful image for the composition and bright colours of the sign contrasting against the darker sky.
