Romy,

Very nice flight shots, especially given the focal length and manual focus. Also
nice Tufted Ducks. I've only seen them once, and didn't get the shots I'd have
liked to (used the 400 f5.6L, and they were too far away...).

Here's sharing a couple of BIFs taken at Candaba wetlands (Philippines) a few days ago, both with the hand held 20D + 500 f4 + Canon 1.4x in manual exposure...:D

1. Great Egret

2. Purple Heron

Regards and merry Christmas,

Romy

The purple heron is a strong image ....the bird as well as the background.
Alas, on the white egret you seem to have lost practically all feather texture, too much light I suppose.;)
Well, pogi Romy, all the best to you too, merry Xmas, glad you are practicing your handholding unsupported by car windows and such.;)

Really great captures. note your comments about lens. So if you had to choose only one lens over the other which would it be. 500 f4 L or the sigmonster ? I'm thinking of buying and have almost decided on the 500

I bought the Sigmonster first before I got the 500 f4, which is now my default hand holding lens.

If I have to do it all over again, I'd choose the Sigmonster over the 500 f4, as my 400 5.6L and 100-400 IS would cover BIFs and hand helds.

If I can only have one, just one long lens, from among the Sigmonster, 500 f4, 400 5.6L or 100-400 IS, then it's tough not to get the 500 f4. It's the best compromise solution as far as reach and portability are concerned.

Hi Romy
Thanks for your comments, looks like I have it right going for the 500 although the extra reach of the sigmoster is also tempting as I also have already the 400mmf5.6L.

Its so difficult to make a choice when considering the costs of such lens.

I was also considering to sell my 400 f5.6 and get a 400mmf2.8L to handle early morning light problems. I was even thinking with 1.4 or 2 extenders stacked to attempt to get the reach at the loss of two stop down.

Making darn dicissions send me crazy

But reviewing your captures convinces me I need the extra reach. 500 here we go I guess

Yes, John... go with the 500 f4. If 700 mm f/5.6 is not enough reach down the road, you can always add the Sigmonster or 600 f4....:D

Working on a tripod, the 500 f4 is not too bad in low light - 20D + 500 f4 + Canon 1.4x, ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/25 sec:
