Shepherds can really get big sometimes, can't they? Here's Remy and Dana in the pool (taken by my wife last week). Remy is the big one, and he weighed in at 73kg (160lbs) last January. He's since lost some of his baby fat, and now he's down to a positively svelte 57kg (125lbs). Dana topped out in her youth at 37kg (81lbs), and is now down to only about 30kg (65lbs) at 12.5 years old.

I love 'em, though. Big or small, they're the best dogs to have.

Definitely, once you have had a shepherd, you are so spoilt as they are brilliant dogs. I was thinking, does your boy have some Shiloh in him as they usually weigh in heavier and are taller because of their breeding.:)

As far as I know, he's pure GSD. His mother and father were both AKC registered. Remy was part of a litter of 8, but his mother killed all but Remy and his brother. The owner managed to save just those two, but she was never able to get the mother to nurse her two remaining pups, so they were both bottle fed. She found that she couldn't sell them, as potential owners were disturbed by fact that the mother turned on her pups, and that they hadn't received mother's milk, so we were given Remy as a gift. The owner was a patient of my wife, and she brought Remy in with her for her appointments (couldn't leave them alone). Remy bonded with my wife very quickly, so we got an addition to the family.

And yes, using Aussie and British lingo in the same post is $50.00 fine. :)

That's so sad to hear. :(
I am glad he found a nice home with you guys.
Any reason the mother turned like that? Is it common?

As far as I've heard, it's extremely uncommon for a mother to kill her own pups, but it does happen. The dog's owner was so shook up by this that she decided not to breed her dog again.

I would probably be in the same boat!
That's just a really sickening thing to witness. :/
